Switching Insulins - The Why?

I was curious to know what factors come into play to cause a person to change their cat's insulin.

I am still quite new with Penny's diagnosis and have been reading the AAHA guidelines on feline diabetes and there are many mentions of glargine being the most likely insulin to reach remission.

Penny is still on her first vial of ProZinc, recommended from the vet because it is long acting and approved for use in cats.

I'm in no rush to make a change, but I would like to know more about what goes into that decision.

We usually recommend giving an insulin and fair trial before swapping. Up to 6 months.
If the insulin is not working at all and other causes have been ruled out such as not feeding low carb food, then it is fair to try another insulin. Looking at your SS Prozinc seems to be working well.

The duration of PZI varies from cat to cat, so some cats will get better duration on it than others. Someone who knows more will hopefully add information to this, but there was an earlier version of PZI that had a longer duration. It was discontinued around 2009.

The two insulins that the AAHA supports are glargine and Prozinc. If you're comfortable and like Bron said, if Prozinc is working, stick with it.

If I can make a request -- can you convert your sliding scale spreadsheet to the spreadsheet that we use? It will make it a lot easier for us to interpret your results.

I would convert it to FDMB version… if I could figure out how to. Dosing timing was roughly +8 and I’m not sure how to convert that to the other spread sheet. Do I use multiple lines for the same day? Is there a way to signal that the pre-shot tests were not at +12? I’ve switched back to +12 dosing as of April 12, and those numbers are in the FDMB SS.
