Our vet has decided its time to try something new for Ruby because her numbers are all over the map.

She prescribed 1 unit of Lantus, twice a day. I'm going to start it on Saturday so I'll have two days home with her.

What do I need to know about switching over and Lantus?

Amy,
I posted a message in Lantus TR and asked if someone could take a look and let you know if you need to do anything in order to make the switch. They would know better than anyone, I think. I really hope this helps Ruby (and you) out, and look forward to hearing some good news on how she is doing.

Best,
Carl

hi - carl asked for a lantus user to come and talk with you. i've been using lantus for about a year. i'm sure others will stop by too, although it seems a little more quiet than usual tonight.

can you tell us a little bit more about ruby's story? that will help us give you better advice.

how old is she, how much does she weigh, how long has she been diagnosed and do you know about what her BG numbers were when she was diagnosed?

does she have any other health problems? has she had any episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA?

looking at her ss and your comments - is she still eating dry DM? changing over to canned low carb cat food is something that alone will drop her numbers.

that's probably enough to hit you with to start. good for you for home testing and for looking for information to help ruby as much as possible. i'm sure we can help you here. you've found the right spot. i'll watch for your responses.

Thanks Carl. I've grown kind of attached to all of you here and I'm going to miss you! You've all been so much help to me and Ruby.

(We'll still be on PZI until Friday night. I feel like I'm moving away or something equally silly! )

Julie - I responded over on the Lantus board. I'll update it to answer a few more of your questions.

That's right Amy, just a click away. And hey, it could well be that after a couple of weeks on Lantus, I'll be able to look at Ruby's SS and have something more constructive to say besides "I'm scratching my head and thinking I have no clue what is going on with Ruby!"

Switch from PZI to Lantus around 75%, but since you are at .5u already, I would guess 1 for 1 would be OK.
Since you will be shed filling at the start, .5u Lantus would be safer than 1u Lantus.

Hi Gayle,

Switching from PZI to Lantus was the best thing for Racci. She's doing sooo much better! She's much more regulated after being all over the place. I hope you have the same experience.

Melanie
