My vet has given me a prescription for Lantus. A few questions: where is the best place to purchase, how does it differ from Prozinc, and how much of a dose should I start with?? Thank you all in advance!

If you don't want to pay about $500 for a 5 pack of pens, you should email or fax your Lantus script to Marks Marine Pharmacy in Canada. That's where most of us are buying it from now since its 1/3rd the cost.

Any idea what dosage to start? I am assuming its a very low dose to start with...

Since she's already on 4U of ProZinc, I'd suggest starting her no lower than 3U of Lantus....if she needs less, she'll earn the reductions (but if you're waiting to get your lantus from Canada, we have time to discuss a good starting dose)
The biggest difference between ProZinc and Lantus is that ProZinc is an "in and out" insulin....that means once it's cleared the body, it's gone....with lantus, there's a "depot" that fills and then gradually releases back into the body, so it works in a totally different way.
When you first start on Lantus, you'll want to hold the starting dose for 5-7 days for the depot to fill

Thank you Chris & China once again. I am hoping Lantus will be easier on Lily. Seems when the Prozinc is used up her glucose goes up several hours before her next scheduled shot.

That's one of the nice things about Lantus....you usually get some "overlap" from one cycle to the next

My suggestion is to head over to Lantus Land instead of Health forum ... amazing group of people with a lot of knowledge. Baby is on Lantus & no complaints here (except I wish she was OTJ) but I am blessed to have her & very manageable. Hope Lantus works for you two too!!

I just switched to Lantus from Vetsulin. Although we did pretty well on the Vetsulin for quite a while, we are really liking the Lantus! You won't be sorry you switched!
