Swinging BG numbers...

Tonight Rusty's BG is dropped from high 200s to around 60 three hours after his injection, which I gave him after he ate 4 oz food. I gave him slightly less than his usual dose (2 units Humulin N) tonight... let's say around 1.5 units. Three hours later I tested his BG just to be safe (he had a low on Friday evening so I'm testing him more) and it was at that 60 number again. So here we go with the Friskies with gravy and the additional tests every 1/2 hour... ugh! Could he be going into remission after only a month of being on insulin?? His BG spikes to the 400s sometimes. I just don't understand this.

I know from posting before that Humulin is not everyone's favorite, but it is what my vet prescribed and they are of the belief that it is the standard. I obviously plan to call them tomorrow to discuss this, and I'm in the process of looking for another local vet that has more experience with diabetic pets. I just can't handle the stress of these BG swings right now. I don't want to give him any more insulin but I also don't want his BG spiking to the 400s again (as it did LAST night after he was low on Friday night and I didn't shoot him in the morning).

Is this all part of the struggle? We've been at this for almost 6 weeks and this is the first time I'm noticing the dips.

I am going through the same thing with my Squeakers and he was just diagnosed last Saturday and I have him on 0.25 of Novolin N which is the same as Humulin N as far as I know. I do not understand it...every time I give him a dose he drops very low within 4 to 6 hours

From reading on this board it seems as if Humulin/Novolin is not everyone's preferred insulin because it hits hard and fast, but then a friend of mine who is a diabetes nurse says that it tends to peak at 4 hours. Both my vet and two pharmacists I've spoken to said that this is the most common insulin they see prescribed for cats, so I'm confused.

I was told that by the pharmacist as well. The Vet actually prescribed Prozinc but I could not afford to buy it after the $500 vet bill that has wiped out my entire savings. I had no choice but to buy the Novolin N from Walmart

Good luck! Hopefully we will get some stability soon...
