Hello everyone, not sure if this is the right thread. Scooby has been doing well so far, I thought at least. We had to take him into Emergency because he was vomiting and straining to poop. They found he has a very low anemia number and they suspect cancer but no definite signs, we are currently en route to another vet that can possibly do a blood transfusion but if it's cancer unfortunately that's the final page. These past two months have been very stressful from the initial diagnosis to finally feeling comfortable dosing, testing, and being steady in his BG and now we are here. Not even at square one but behind square one. It's very disheartening and upsetting nearing the end of my babies life in this manner after thinking everything was improving.
Kind words and wisdom appreciated. I thank you all for the support and knowledge up to this point.

hi I am so sorry your going thru this. I dont have much experience in these issues but I do have lots in prayers:bighug:
there is a good drug for anemia and caught early it works best-i am goin to tag someone with more experience @tiffmaxee

On what basis do they suspect cancer? Try and find out why they think cancer and where. Leukemia? Sounds like she might have a blockage. When did she last poop? Could it just be constipation? That would not explain the anemia though. Did the first vet run any tests and give you copies? Prayers.

We dont know for the cancer yet, They suspect cancer because they aren't sure where the anemia is coming from but nothing for certain if he even does have cancer. They only ran blood gave me the paperwork and the vet we are at now has it, they didn't feel any blockages. I'm not certain last time he pooped, I have 2 cats so not sure which is which. He had some little poops come out but he was straining pretty good. We are at the vet who can do a transfusion as that needs done for certain

I've had a cat and a dog wrongly diagnosed with cancer because the symptoms mimicked two different conditions. I wish doctors wouldn't scare the crap out of us before they know for certain. Please follow up on what tiffmaxee suggested and if appropriate enquire about a needle biopsy.
He's a very handsome boy, I love that nose.

I'm so sorry to hear about what Scooby is going through. I know that heart breaking feeling when they're not well and you're at that point...

We lost our oldest, Sonny, pretty dramatically in 2017. Everyone was devastated, even his brothers (cats). So we eventually got a new family member - a very special polydactyl princess torbie named Sadie. She's just the cutest thing ever, and she really saved all of our hearts.
Over the first two years we thought she may have IBD, but the last strike was in October 2019. She had a stroke like episode, and I rushed her to the ER vet. I was told she had a heart murmur, then they found she had anemia, and told us she probably had bone marrow cancer and to put her down.
Thankfully, I did not. I took her back to my vet who explained after some additional tests she had Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia which was idiopathic. It caused the murmur, and her poor bone marrow was just so tired (she must have been dealing with it for a while unknown to us) that she needed some help. Two years after continued steroid treatment, she's back to being a crazy little bean!!! She'll be on steroids for life, however long that is, but I'm glad we did what we could to help her. I won't lie, it was a very rough roller coaster until she was stable - but it was worth it to see the love bug now being herself.

All I can say, is trust your gut and keep digging until you find out what is going on. There's so much they can't tell us, and boy I wish they could. Big hugs to you, keep us posted on what the tests find.
Bella

I would just want to know a diagnosis and possible treatment before making that final decision so you have no second guessing. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Update for you all. We took him into the second vet, at this vet they were more concerned with kidney values than anemia, no mention of cancer. Unfortunately an overnight stay and the tests they wanted to run became way too steep of a price and that didn't even include a transfer he would need to an internal medicine specialist. It seems he is just not doing well from diabetes and a nearly DKA hospital stay last month, to now with anemia and further kidney issues. We took him home for palliative care until he is ready to pass, very unfortunate turn of events from what we thought was constipation

Sounds like the anemia is from kidney disease. Do they give you sub-q fluids to keep him hydrated and more comfortable ?

If there was just one thing I got good at over the years it was pain management and transdermal BUPE made it so much easier.
The mixture and dosing is always at or near the top of my profile. Safe journey Scooby.

I'm so sorry to hear what Scooby is going through. Every time we come to this crossroads as pet parents, it's very difficult. You wrestle with all the questions in your brain. The only solace I can offer, is to listen to your heart and that unspoken bond with your furbaby. Sometimes they will get better with treatment, and sometimes we know they can't go on any longer suffering. Either way, our decision is out of love and doing what's best for them.

Sending love to you and Scooby. :bighug:
