I rescued my civvie Dee off the streets about 3 months ago. Currently I'm feeding a mix of BFF Tuna & Pumpkin, Precise Holistic Grain-free Flaked Chicken, and Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit. All are grain-free and wet food. The vet estimated Dee's age at 1-2 years old and she got a clean bill of health. I'd forgotten how nice it is to have a healthy cat around! :-D

That being said, I'm curious about supplements. Anyone have a go-to site for reading on the latest and greatest? Or is a balanced diet really all I need? I don't want to go nuts and throw a bunch of stuff at her, but I'm considering at least adding a pro-biotic. There is a ton out there and I can't decide what to get!

If yo are using a commercial food that says it is complete no supplements are necessary. Some of my cats get L-Lysine since they appear to have the herpes virus

Hello Nikki's Mom,

I am possibly more pro-supplements than many people here, but, having seen the benefit of them in my own life I started thinking about the possibility of supplements for my cats.

That being said, I am quite new to giving supplements to cats and my actual experience of that is very limited. So I strongly suggest that you read up and research any particular issue/supplement that you're interested in.

Here are 2 recent threads that may interest you:

In addition to the discussions in the threads mentioned above I should also point out some apparent benefits of vitamin B12 supplementation to some cats: Some cats with poor appetite seem to have benefited from B12 injections, and diabetic cats with diabetic neuropathy seem to have responded well to supplements of methyl B12 (including my own diabetic cat).

This subject has really caught my imagination recently and I would be really pleased to know of anyone else's experience of supplementing their cats' diets.

Thanks for the info! When we initially were dealing with Nikki's gastro issues, I'd taken her to a holistic vet in the hopes of finding a non-steroid treatment. With her I had tried aloe juice, pro-biotics, enzymes, and omega 3's. Unfortunately, her issues progressed to the point that we had to go with the steroid, which is how I ended up with a diabetic cat. :? That being said, if I wasn't afraid of upsetting the applecart of her digestive issues, I'd add a few things back supplement-wise.

I also loved the holistic vet, and would take Dee there in a heartbeat, but I'm not ready to subject her to a 40 minute drive there and back just yet. She's a nervous little thing and I want to work on her confidence before taking her that far away. My only concern is that she might be a bit constipated. She generally has a daily BM but it will sometimes be more like every 30-40 hours than every 24 and it seems like her stool is pretty hard. Of course, I've lived with a cat with diarrhea her whole life, so I'm not sure if it's just that my perception of "normal" is skewed!
