Hey everyone,

Vet told me there is nothing to worry about and that Thai's labs were normal - so I requested a copy. ;)

I'm finding some items that are off, should I be concerned? Labs are updated on her sheet, first row is most recent lab work.

Triglycerides are 389 when 160 is the max normal
Cholesterol is 282 when 220 is the max normal
Abs eosinophils (whatever the hell that is) is 1215 when 1000 is max normal
pH in her urine is 8 (7 is max, no not too much higher I guess)
Protein in her urine is 2+ when is should be negative

Anything serious going on here?

Many of my cats has high triglycerides and cholesterol with no problems
High eosinophils can be cause by allergies
Urine pH is influenced by diet and genetics. A high pH can promote the formation of struvite crystals n the urine
Protein in urine is typically caused by degradation in kidney function. What was the urine specific gravity and blood values of creatinine and BUN/blood urea

Hey Larry! All of the info that they gave me are on the labs on Thaiger's Template in my signature. No sure the different between all of them but the ones in my original post are the only ones out of range.

There is not urine specific gravity (USG) for the 4/10/15. The only USG (1.028 was on 11/30/14 when the creatinine was 1.7.
The 4/10/15 was 2.1. Thus, I would expect that the USG would have been lower than 1.028. 1.028 is not that goo anyway. Thus, I suspect that the protein in the urine is due to kidney degradation.
The is not BUM for 4/10/15 but BUN is very dependent upon diet and is elevate by a high protein diet.

My bad - just looked at the labs again... Specific gravity = 1.057
The BUN/creatinine ratio was 26 and the creatinine was 2.1, didn't provide a seperated BUN value.

@Larry and Kitties - you think this may be indicative of some progressing kidney problems? She's OTJ since early February so I was wondering when another issue would pop up. :(

I just read that methimazole can cause high triglycerides and cholesterol in cats... she has been on that med for her hyperthyroidism for a while now. Weird.

Both my vet and the IM Specialist who treated my Tiger said that hyperthyroidism can mask kidney problems- once the hyperthyroidism is controlled or cured, water consumption returns to normal and whatever underlying kidney problems become more apparent. More info here.

@Larry and Kitties - your knowledge is super helpful. Thank you. Do you think the protein and ph levels in the urine are concerning?

I also just figured out that BUN is urea nitrogen (d'oh!) - so I do have that value. It is 54 (HIGH).

Per Cat Info, you can add about 1 ounce lean meat/poultry to 5 ounces of cat food, mix well, and portion out. This will improve the protein amount and reduce the fat and carbohydrate amounts.

@BJM - when this lab work was taken she was on purely canned food (Fancy Feast Classics) diet. Now she is having a mix of canned food and the diabetic dry food because she stopped eating the canned. So if I add some chicken or turkey to her canned food, you think this will help lower the triglycerides and cholesterol?

Since being put back on the dry food, she has been throwing up about every other day again so i'm trying to get her back on all wet food - she's resisting though. Have tried everything. :(

BUN is very diet dependent while creatinine is not. Based on the creatinine and USG value I would not concerned about the protein. Also, I know of nothing that can be done about it.
If the microscopic examination of the urine sediment did not soy crystals I would not be concerned about the pH

She may be more inclined to eat the canned food if you start adding in some plain meat or poultry.
Check out Evo Cat and Kitten dry at about 8% calories from carbohydrates; maybe slowly mix that in the diabetic dry and see if vomitng reduces. She may be allergic to something in the diabetic dry if she is vomiting daily on it.

Hyperthyroidism can also cause protein in the urine. They say it generally doesn't cause a significant amount, but it did in my cat's case.
Balki's proteinuria eventually reached 3+ with a UPC (urine protein/creatinine ratio) of 2.6 (range 0-0.7) until Carbimazole lowered his T4 from 75 to 17 (range 6-52 Australian levels).
I had measured his urine protein at home with Multistix for a year and nothing lowered it, not even hypertension control, until diagnosis and treatment for hyperthyroidism.
I had tested it at home for a year because in 2012 he was originally diagnosed with glomerulonephritis because of the proteinuria, and given months to live.
Balki's protein seems to go back up to 2+ if the T4 is above about 30 (again, Australian).
Supposedly, the proteinuria of hyperthyroidism is not damaging to the kidneys.

There are other causes of protein in the urine also. There's prerenal, renal and postrenal (inflammation of the urinary tract, stones etc) proteinuria. Did they do a UPC?
