My cat, Sue, has been getting poo all over his back "hocks" (is that what you would call it? The part of the legs that a cat would walk on if it had neuropathy). Any ideas on what I can do? Before he was regulated, he often had "frosty paws" from urinating so much, but this has stopped since he has gone off the juice. He is getting poo everywhere and we had to give him a bath today (not recommended - LOL). He is usually very good about covering up his poo after going, so I'm at a loss as to what to do. He also gets litter all over his nose, but has done this for quite a while. Has anyone ever dealt with this before??

Thanks,
Jenny & Sue

Do you use a covered litter box? Maybe if you uncovered it, he'd feel like he had more room and not step in it so much?

I don't. I have 4 cats and 5 uncovered litter boxes. I tested his BG yesterday to be sure he was okay and it was 75.

He also seems to have some really bad gas! This isn't typical for him or any kitties I've ever had. I have some FortiFlora and will begin sprinkling some on his food tonight.

Is his poo...loose? That might be the problem and with 4 cats you might not catch there is an underlying issue.

When Attie had all his bowel issues ...it was the loose poo that he would get all over his paws and hocks in the effort to bury the nasty stuff.

then he'd fling it! :o

I can't say for sure, but I think it is. I gave him a little plain yogurt and some Forti Flora. I hope that was okay.

Clumping litter seems especially prone to clumping ... to the cat.

You might experiment with non-clumping litter, or aquarium gravel, to let the moisture drain away and to reduce the clumping to him.

Plus (and you probably know this already), the litterbox should be at least 1.5 times the length of the longest cat and have a good 3 - 4 inches of litter in it.

With mulitple cats, extra large boxes may help as they seem to focus in on 1 at times, making that target especially likely to get gunky, even if scooped 1-2 times daily.

Maui had major poo issues in the beginning and what a mess.

I kept a supply of baby wipes, surgical gauze pads and waterless shampoo. I would squirt the shampoo onto the pads and wipe her clean. I used baby wipes for easy messes. Just be aware that if there are sores or cuts, the baby wipes will sting.

Maui didn't like that I used these items, but it was much better than the alternative, her tongue.

If he is having regular loose bowel movements, I'd have him checked for parasites, including giardia. Another cause could be food allergy.

Thanks for everyone's responses! Sue seems to be better now. He usually eats Wellness Chicken or raw and I have given him two cans of Merrick BG turkey and I think maybe that was the culprit, although I'm not sure why it would have caused the diarrhea. He has had a poo-free-paw day!!!
