Has anyone ever “suddenly” found they are giving more fur shots, and if so can you please tell me about it?

I haven’t had a fur shot in months prior, yet have had 3 in the past week although nothing about our routine has changed, except which side of him I shoot at a particular time.

Could it be than now that he is properly hydrated whereas he was dehydrated before (or vice versa), and could that significantly change the dynamics of his skin tenting?
(He is eating 2x as he ever has, which actually puts his hydration where it is supposed to be)

I am really really beating myself up and trying to be careful each time, … I tried subQ’s and a bad session left him more agitated when I shoot, still—two times I have been astonished it was a fur shot because my technique and positioning seemed good.

Thank you for your compassionate sharing.

It is killing me so bad to have messed this up again at a time when his numbers are already high…

I have always wanted to “pull back” on the plunger to check but have never been able to figure out the technique despite serious attempts. (Pulling and pushing plunger are opposite motions for hands, and other hand is full holding tent)

There is no need to pull back on the syringe.
Fur shots happen to us all, and I know how very frustrating it is!
I shaved a small area both sides after I gave a few fur shots and it was good while I got my confidence back.
I doubt it’s anything wrong you are doing..it is just bad luck.

Thank you for your reassurance and encouragement, which has helped me to focus on giving myself the space to do the shot right instead of trying to find something to fix. Using a shaved area to build up confidence is a really good idea. I got a full dose in this morning and he is not prone to ketones so I am very thankful for that.

Have a terrific Thursday!

I’m glad you got in the shot OK.
Even though he’s not prone to ketones, it is a good idea when a cat is not regulated and especially if a fur shot is given , to check for ketones.

I used to never be 100% sure I’d given a good shot until I picked up a technique from another member.

Instead of tenting, try the pinch and roll. Position your hand with your thumb pointing across the top of the cat’s back (assuming an injection in the scruff). Pinch the skin between the thumb and your index finger and then roll your thumb forward over your index finger. You should have a nice and clear patch of skin exposed (unless you have a long-haired cat). Then just inject right in the middle of that patch of skin. You can watch the needle go in, so you know for sure that you got a good shot.
