I got the AlphaTRAK today and spent the afternoon acquainting myself with it. In all it is much more straightforward than my human glucometer. When I felt comfortable with it I went upstairs to Selkie in her quarantine room and gave it a go. Using the stylus pen in the AlphaTRAK I finally got a good sample from her and got my first blood sugar reading.

I'm a bit surprised because the needle gauge in the AlphaTRAK kit is slightly smaller than my own needles, but Selkie didn't jump this time, and the flow of blood was good enough that I could have used my human glucometer if I'd chosen. (I'll probably run them side-by-side later just to see how they compare.) I've started her google chart, and now I just need to gather more information to see how her initial treatments are going.

Blood sugar was slightly high, but way better than the last handful of readings from the vet's office. No surprise. We'll see how it goes from here.

Don't be surprised if you find the AlphaTrak numbers to be higher (sometimes significantly higher) than your human glucometer (unless the human one was the OneTouch Mini...it's very close to the AT). It's scary when the numbers are high...but reassuring when they're low.

I use the OneTouch Mini for my normal checks (usually within 12 points of the AT...often closer or even the same) but in the lower range, with a OneTouch under 100 I always double check with my AlphaTrak. The OneTouch Mini strips run about $34 a bottle...about $20 cheaper than the AT.

That being said, however, I feel better just knowing I have the AT to verify numbers when they seem out of whack.
