Sub Q Fluids

You might consider assist-feeding, using an oral syringe and pureed cat food. Pick a food not normally in rotation as some times the cat will develop an aversion to syringed food.

That's exactly what I started this morning. How much do I feed her & how often? Right now all she wants to do is drink water. I can't get my hands on the supplies for sub q fluids until Tuesday as tomorrow is a holiday here.

Can I give her some baby gravol until I can get her to the vet?

A cat needs at least one 5.5oz can of food a day, so while syringe feeding, aim for that amount. Calorie wise it's about 180-200 calories minimum. Fluid requirements is 300ml of fluid a day, but this includes the fluids in the food.

There is sorbitol and sucrose in the baby medicine. Sorbitol is bad for the kidneys. Also, I'm not sure that the specific drug (dimenhydrinate) will help with appetite, it's more for motion sickness.

How much pedialite should I be feeding vegetable? She's drinking lots of water but the eating is the hard part right now.

Make sure the pedialyte is the plain unflavored kind. It should have no sugar, no xylitol, and no colors or flavors. People who have used pedialyte just gave as much as the cat would drink. Maybe replace half of her water with pedialyte.

If she is drinking on her own, you might want to try to make some cat food soup by mixing some food with her fluids to a gravy constancy. This will at least give her additional calories in addition to syringe feeding.

@Meya14 i got the pedialite yesterday & started syringe feeding it to her right away.

Thanks for the info on how much food & water she needs. I'll keep trying to get some food into her.

How much Zantac are you giving her? A typical dose for a cat is about 1/8th of a Zantac 75.

Fluids should only be given after consultation with her vet. Have you seen this video on syringe feeding? Vegetable shouldn't go more than 48 hours without food. If you still can't get food into her, I'd really think about that vet visit. Going too long without food brings the possibility of hepatic lipidosis. And trust me, you don't want to go there - I've fostered a cat with it.

@Wendy&Neko I'm giving her 1/8th of a tablet twice a day like the info says on Tanya's site. I'm also feeding her watered down baby food by syringe, I'm desperate to get her to eat even just a little bit.

My hubby & I are going to take turns looking after vegetable all night, hopefully she can get some rest & feel better tomorrow with the help of the Zantac, baby food & pedialite.

Are you giving insulin? Her SS isn't updated and I was wondering what her numbers were like. And keep testing for ketones, given that she's not eating.

I'm hoping for a better tomorrow for you. :bighug:

I can't find an unsweetened plain Pedialyte. Can someone provide a link? The only unflavored one I can find has dextrose.

Make sure the pedialyte is the plain unflavored kind. It should have no sugar, no xylitol, and no colors or flavors. People who have used pedialyte just gave as much as the cat would drink. Maybe replace half of her water with pedialyte.

I think the plain does have dextrose. Their website says 6 cal, 1.5g dextrose per 2oz. It doesn't seem like much but may raise BS a little.
