Today I found a kitten outside of the school where I teach. He/she is currently out in my garage. I'm afraid to let it in the house in case it gets any of my 3 cats sick. It is friendly and seems healthy. Am I being paranoid? Should I let it in the house? Or, should I have a vet check it out before I introduce it?

I would have a vet check any new baby before you bring him in. Where are you located? Is he going to be warm enough in the garage?

I'm in southern California. It's supposed to get down to 29 degrees tonight. I feel bad for the poor thing, but I am so attached to my cats, I just can't bring myself to put them at risk.

Separation is very important before a vet visit to check for FIV/FeLV/Heartworm and upper respiratory issues. If new kitty is FIV/FeLV,HW negative, but has a URI, please do continue to keep them separated until that is clear. I didn't and my elderly diabetic got a URI for the first time in his life and it was very severe.

You were able to bath a stray cat?? You are either magic or that is one special kitty!!

(And yes, keep separated until vetted, and wash your hands well after leaving her.)

if you see any discharge from eyes, nose, mouth - not only wash your hands, but change your shirt before going near your own cats. Just think about how germs get spread and take precautions - while you want to take care of new kitty, your priority is to keep your own cats safe and healthy.

Here's to a healthy new kitty for you ... and as ceil asked - pictures please!!!!!!!

Thanks for all your advice. Yes, she was surprisingly calm about the bath.
Yesterday, the vet gave her an all clear and then her entrance inspired a lot of nastiness from my cats. Today, all are napping in the same room together. Ah, success!

OOOOOOOOOH! She's beautious! A BLACK kitty! Name? Wow, napping already??? You were the mark apparently!

Thank you everyone for your admiration of my new little pet! She is super sweet and my 3 other cats seem to have accepted her. I'm glad I couldn't find anyone to take her the day I found her!
