Strange preshot readings 40 and then 332?

Hi all! Just got two wildly different preshot BG readings and wondering if this is unusual. First reading: Ninja wouldn't sit still for the entire procedure so once the blood droplet formed, I collected it on my fingernail and tested from there. The droplet was small but my Relion meter measured it at 40. Before panicking and filling Ninja with Karo, I immediately tested her again, got a larger blood drop this time and was able to test it right from her ear. This one came in at 332? First and second test were done within 1 minute of each other. Anyone else get crazy readings like this - and to what do we attribute that? Is the testing less accurate with a smaller blood drop, or tested from the fingernail?

How frustrating for you! I'd be inclined to think the 40 reading was an error since her spreadsheet shows she's never tested under 190 yet, but I hope someone can chime in soon. I've only had the experience of steady high (ugh) numbers so far.

Wow, that's a huge difference. I might test again to see if you get a number closer to either of the two. I wonder if there was a problem with one of the strips? Or maybe like you said it was such a small drop of blood that it didn't read quite right.

I always transfer the blood to my fingernail before the strip - Zeus doesn't stay still long enough and doesn't like the meter/strip near his head. I don't recall who, but someone here told me it was perfectly fine to do it that way.

Good luck.

Based on your spreadsheet, the 40 was very likely an erogenous reading. I have gotten similar reading and reset showed the expected BG.

Thanks all! I agree the 40 was not accurate and think Deanie may be onto something about the short sample causing the low reading. You would think that the Relion meter would just give you an error message though -- related to not enough blood -- rather giving an incorrect BG reading of 40. Wonder how often this happens, and if you routinely get a different reading when more blood is available? I guess the takeaway is that, if I get an unusually low or high reading, I need to retest. Scared me for a minute though... Thanks all for the input.

Another issue is possible contamination - did you wash your hands thoroughly before testing?
