Stopped insulin using young again dry food

With a change to low carb food, some cats have dropped their glucose levels 100-200 mg/dL. One cat dropped 300 mg/dL.

Some cats have needed short courses of insulin and then been able to discontinue it, for at least a time. Some have needed it longer, and some have eventually gotten off insulin.

The cat is always diabetic. If off insulin with normal numbers, the cat is diet-controlled.

You can do a search of the forums for posts on the food by typing Young Again in the search box in the upper right.

I believe there has been at least one member that have achieved remission while on YA, the vast majority that gain remission do so while feeding low carb wet food and giving insulin.

I don't know of anyone here who stopped insulin just because they started feeding YA

YA food isn't magic (despite what their website and salespeople say)...it's low carb, but no lower than the canned and raw foods we suggest feeding in the first place (and in a lot of ways, it's worse just because it's dry)

With ANY food, if you're already giving insulin and reduce the amount of carbs, you can expect the blood glucose to go down, but that just means it's all that much more important that you're home testing to keep your cat safe, but I'd never remove insulin just because I was reducing the carbs either

wow that would be great if my cat actually liked the food but my dear just being newly diagnosed is him liking the food he bever ate wet food yet my other three cats did so its been a year and he does like the Fancy Feast gormet medleys and he has prescription dry food for urination. Congratulations to you!

Just started Young again about a week ago, and right now, Dottie is off insulin. I am still continuing to test several times a day to keep an eye on her. I always will.

I think diet in general helped a great deal, but to be fair, Dottie had a tremendous history of stress on her before her dental surgery, and that stress is gone now, so I can't say that Young Again did it all. Her numbers were headed down anyway. Hallelujah!

Dottie is also eating wet food...I'm using the dry for emergency grazing..because for health reasons, there are times when I simply need to pass out or am laid low for relatively long periods. Going the past two months without needing serious medical assistance has been an unusual break for me. I put it down to the sheer adrenalin rush of caring for a diabetic cat..but I can't always keep that pace up.

I'd rather have dry food available than no food at all. Hubby is willing to give shots, but isn't at all agreeable about going through handstands for feeding a stubborn kitty. If I were to go into hospital, I would need a backup food I can rely on, to get those calories in.

I'm also introducing the furkids to Stella & Chewy's line of freeze dried raw..which I like very much..(to serve, not to eat:p)...and hope to get them over to that, eventually. You might consider trying that, too.

It's always preferable to have a cat on wet food..their species were originally desert dwellers. They don't always drink what they should when they eat dry..... But if they are extremely stubborn, and...say for example, they are sick, not eating at all..but are willing to eat dry..... striking a bargain with them, using dry food like Young Again can an option.

Is it perfect? Nope. Just don't give up on wet food...try to adjust them over time until they're eating wet instead of dry.
