Stinky urine, litter recommendations?

We are working on balancing out Maxwell's glucose, but in the mean time he has an excess of really smelly urine. I think I have tried every kind out there, but none are very good at masking that smell or even able to deal with the amount of urine he manages to produce. Either the clay glues to the bottom or other kinds can't even absorb the urine so it floats on top. Does any one else have this issue? Is this normal for a diabetic cat? And what litters are you all using? I mention it to my vet but she never really gives me an answer on what this could mean.

I've tested most types of litter when Perlutz was a kitten but once I found silica litter, I never looked back. If your cat makes a mess around the litter box when digging/covering, it will be as painful as walking on legos  but it's well worth it when it comes to smell. The crystals are very porous and they absorb and lock moisture in as well as odour. They also stay dry to touch so there's no wet paws :joyful:

I've been using equine stall bedding (compressed pellets of fir or pine) -- when moisture hits the pellets they turn into sawdust, absorb the liquid

I like it because I can compost it .. and all I ever smell is evergreen bark, until it all gets used up, then it's easy enough to toss in the bin

solid stuff dries out, can be flushed down the commode

shake the litter pan, the pellets come to the top, the sawdust sinks .. or use less pellets, change it oftener .. cats prefer that !

I use and love Okocat natural wood litter. It clumps well and has a nice, light wood scent. Of course, whatever you use, scooping every day is important to control odor/mess.

If your cat's glucose is regulated, there should not still be excessive urine. It also seems odd that it has such a bad smell. I think I would want a urinalysis done just to make sure there is not an issue.

I have not recently done a urinalysis and my vet just says, "maybe we will need to do one." I think I will go ahead and have one done. Thank you! And thank everyone for the recommendations! I look forward to a less smelly commode... :)
