Good morning friends. So this yesterday was the first day I started Max on Lantus. He is a newly diagnosed diabetic as of Sunday. He is suppose to have Lantus 2 units. I gave him his first dose yesterday morning at 1020 and do believe it was a fur shot:( b/c throughout the day he never dropped below 550 and actually was as high as 600s last night. I gave him 2 units last night. he was over 645 when I check him last night. I checked him after I gave him the Lantus about two hours later, he had only dropped a point. I checked him at 0400 this morning and he was 500s. I pulled his dry food up this morning. I woke up this morning, tried to check him and he wasn't having it. So I fed him and he ate a little dry food and i checked him and he was 302. I went ahead and gave him the 2 units. My concern is this may be too much? What are you all's thoughts? I plan to check him every four hours. I left a little dry food in a bowl for him since he is a grazer. I am steadily going to try and wean the dry food. But remember, its only been two days since I received his diagnosis. Also, he seems like he just has no energy, is this from the blood sugars? thanks in advance

Can you update your spreadsheet with the data you've seen so far? Anyone helping you with dosing will want to look a the spreadsheet data.

Did you smell his fur after the shot yesterday? Lantus has a particular smell and it's usually pretty obvious if you do a fur shot. The other possibility for the numbers not moving is that Lantus is a depot insulin. When you start Lantus, some of the insulin goes into the depot, some goes into the blood stream. It can take 5-7 days for the depot to build up and for you to see what the dose can really do. Was it the vet's decision to start Max on 2 units?

A small housekeeping note on How You Can Help Us Help You. Take a look at the blue link, at the bottom is a note on modifying your signature and what we like to see in it. A cat is more than just their numbers, and we like to look at the whole picture.

HI there ! Sorry about the diagnosis but congrats on finding the place to navigate Feline Diabetes.
My cat weighed 13lbs at diagnosis and we started Lantus at 1 unit/ twice a day. If your kitty is a big guy....two units might be appropriate.
The initial dose is usually 0.25 units per kg of the cats weight ( some vets start at 0.5 units per kg though which can be a lot).

It's great you are looking at weaning the dry food , that will help :)

Agreed, dry food as part of the diet can mean a cats needs a much higher dose. Which one are you currently feeding?

the science diet hydrolyzed protein dry food bc a month ago they thought he had ibd. He goes to the internal medicine specialist next wednesday to go over foods and his glucose curves I have been doing at home.

Yikes - that is really high carb food. Even the wet z/d is 35% carbs, and diabetics need under 10%. We have a number of cats here with IBD, and there are a lot better options for IBD and diabetes, that are low carb wet food or raw food. And a lot cheaper than anything you'll buy at the vet. You might want to read through this web site. https://www.ibdkitties.net/

I know it's scary when he goes so high. You're just starting, so that's going to happen.

Dry food really does make a difference. We were giving Snickers 5 units and he was high all the time. We gradually switched him to only wet food. Now we give him 2.5 units, and he's finally getting down to reasonable numbers.

We know it takes time to switch to wet food. Snickers was the worst, he would lay beside the plate of wet food and stare at it. And he likes wet food! He just likes dry food more. Does Max like wet food?

You said he doesn't have any energy, that could be the diabetes. But bring it up every time you take him to the vet, in case it's something else.
