Hey, I've been on the main board for a few weeks, and am starting to slowly be less stressed out about my cat satan's diabetes.
I have a difficult work schedule as a nurse being out of the house 14.5-15 hours at a time 3x a week and have gotten some very kind patient advice from several members here. I think I am getting the hang of it....
We're off the dry food totally, and all low carb wet, satan is still thrownig some 400+ numbers occasionally, but we're in the yellow sometimes nowadays.

I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on if satan's numbers seem better or worse. I am bumping him up from 2 units bid, to 2.25u bid, however when i go to work i've been dropping him down because i get stuck in a pattern of shots off schedule, one early, around 9+ and the next at 15+, than 9+ again. I do my best to keep him as close to 12, 12, but my schedule is erratic.

Any feedback would be great.

satans ss should be in the signature

thanks
-Melissa

Given your really erratic schedule it looks like Satan is doing very well, those higher 400s you are seeing looks to be a bounce off that pretty blues that you got the day before. They don't have to go super low to near hypo numbers to bounce and throw higher numbers the next day or two. What happens is that their little bodies get use to running really high so when insulin is introduced and they get lower than what feels like the new normal to them the liver tries to 'save' itself by releasing stored sugars and counter-regulatory hormones. We affectionately call it liver training. :-D The only real thing to do is hold the dose and wait out their little bodies to figure out that normal numbers are just that normal.

Totally true what Mel said....Kit used to bounce from getting a yellow at the beginning! Took me a bit to understand that it's best to not freak out and think that your dose is too low and raise it. Instead, it would take everything I had to just tie my hands behind my back and hold the dose until the dose cleared (some cats, it takes up to 72 hours).

thank you. will do. patience. i've just woken up to a ravenously hungry kitty. who is getting tonights shot. on time.! haha

i'll try and get the hang of proper posting formatting

thank you

Re: still kind of new- +9 54

alright. maybe my first hypo

kittys blood sugar is 54. no wonder he was so ravenous

fed him his regular food bc he's goobling it down, will recheck his fs in 15 min or so. it's a good thing i don't have to leave for work till 10pm tonight. or i'd be pulling my hair out.

There isn't really a proper posting format over here, so your post today was posted just fine :-D Some of us have our own style of posting just so we can keep everything straight in our own heads..lol But other than that no real posting format ....well okay in English does help at least me out...

54 at +9 isn't too scary but you will want to keep an eye on him through tests as well as your eyes for awhile. Hopefully he is just having a late nadir and will start coming up shortly. I'll be around for a little while yet so I will keep an eye out for you. Let me know when you have a new number and we will go from there.

i let him have a spoon full of hi carb gravy food, and most of a 5.5 oz can of low carb.

got a 6:50pm 71 after much coaxing the cat out from under the bed.

will check again... in a little bit. satan is mad at me at the moment.

thank you so much for being so prompt mel!

71 could be the HC food kicking or it could be the insulin wearing off, either way you will need to keep an eye on him for awhile. Those first low green numbers get kind of scary, but remember that normal for a non-diabetic cat is between 40-120 on a human meter. I think we have all freaked out just a little bit when we got that first low number.

Once you have been at this for awhile you will learn how to handle those numbers without heart failure. :-D Like I know Musette can drop clear down to the 30s and still be fine because she will self regulate by eating. I also know she is a food spiker so I don't go into panic mode now until she hits the 20s..lol.

But you are handling this great and did exactly what you needed to do. Also don't panic if he is higher than normal tomorrow because more than likely he is going to bounce off that 54 as he hasn't seen that low of a number for awhile.

i have to leave for work tonight about 9:45-9:50 pm any advice on how much to give him.... i'll be gone till about 9:35 in the morning.

at 8pm satans bs was 115, so its going up, but i guess i don't know if its going to last.... any advice on dosing,

and thanks mel for telling me to post how i want. i am sort of chaotic. in my thoughts it seems. but this all helps.

I think since you are going to be gone all night I would just give him a token dose of either 1u or even .5u...Yeah he maybe really high in the morning partly from a bounce off of this shot and partly from you reducing way down, but better high for a night than too low for a minute.

Also after going this low I would look at reducing his dose anyhow down by .25 so if I understand his spreadsheet correctly that would be 1.75u on the days you have to shoot early and 2u on the days you can give it 12 hours apart.

Your doing a great job dancing with Satan.

i'll aim for .75 hahahaha. his sugar at 9:10p is 175, so its higher, but he definitely has eaten a bunch. mostly low carb though.

ill check it again before i give him the shot. and leave out food,

i never know how much to feed him. he'll eat so much if i let him.

thank you!

Maxwell and Musette were both like that in the beginning they tried to eat me out of house and home. But once they gained back the weight they had lost and started getting better regulated they started eating like a normal cat their sizes...However with Maxwell that is still a can and a half to 2 cans (5.5 oz) per day since he is a lean 17lb while Musette is a petite little lady at 8lbs so she only eats about a can per day.

Your kitty will be hungry in the beginning. It's normal. It'll slow down after time, and yes, it's going to take a lot of patience. (as I type this, my hungry girl is staring me down )

With regards to the insulin, you can leave the decrease/increases to 6 cycles, instead of every 3. It may give your kitty some time to come down from the bouncing too, and also fill up the shed a bit more. Some cats may take a bit more time to clear a bounce than others. I know that Blackie does, so I don't do any dosing adjustments until she does.

Otherwise, it looks like he's doing great. :) You both are. :-D Keep up the excellent work!

hey angela if you don't mind, could you define what you mean by the cycles.... i think you mean when you increase, 6 12 hour shots to observe the blood sugar? but i could be wrong.....

and hahaha i don't like messing iwht his insulin too much

we're gonna try the 2 units again, with a drop to 1.75 when i work with the early shots. and see how we do there again.

thank you guys.

today, as predicted, was full of higher numbers.

i guess my issue with feeding satan is- he always ate everything in sight, so its hard to tell what he needs i suppose. he's 19.5 or 20 lbs currently. and he's always crying for food. he does this thing where he's running around and howling for food. so i was worried his sugar was low again, but at 351 at a +9 he's more desperate to eat than at 50. eep

thanks again. will try to keep up the sugar dancing with teh cat :)
