I posted our history on the Main Forum, I been following the Facebook page but haven't been to the board for a while. To make the story short...
Switch to Lantus on 05/26, before we had Protofan 6u. 10 days at the vet, with different doses of Lantus, vet decided he will do fine without insulin and prescribed Metomorfin or Glucofan (we are in Ukraine so names might be different in other countries). Went home. 2 days later I understand he needs insulin and started 0.5u Lantus. Numbers bouncing a lot. Reduce to 0.325u (drop system) and got more steady numbers but high. Back to 0.5 for a week now but numbers around 300's even 400's PS. You can look at our chart. We changed completely to wet already. Adding water (a little won't take a lot). Testing for ketones everyday, always negative. Rear legs weak (prefers to be sitting than standing) but not walking on his hocks.

Been stomach sick for 3 days, I assume because of Sheba food, which we tried and he loved, but now we avoid it. He is taking some antibiotic for that, twice a day.

So, today, I thought we will give a try with 0.625u. since during the weekend I can make a curve easier.

Will appreciate your thought. First 10 days, were at the vets, so information is missing, they gave me copy of the files but in cyrillic and abreviations I do not understand. Numbers form 06/05 are already from home. confused_cat

Hello Ana and sweet Bruno and welcome to Lantus Land (LL). For others who want to read the history, her previous posts are:

We link to link to our previous post, cause then it helps people follow what was said previously.

One thing I've notice on Bruno's spreadsheet is that if you get a mid blue preshot, you have been skipping his shot. On this forum, we use 150 as the number where you post for help before shooting. Anything over that you are OK to shoot without help, as long as you are around to monitor. Our motto here is that we shoot low to stay low. We wouldn't ask you to shoot below 100 (5.5) until you've got experience with lower numbers but if you look at the other posts on this forum, you'll see that the more experienced members will shoot anything above 50 (2.8). When you shoot a lower number, often the cycle will be quite flat. And it's only by spending time in numbers from 50-120 that the pancreas can heal.

I think sticking to .625 for at least 6 doses sounds like a good plan, unless Bruno goes below 50 (2.8).

Thank you, Wendy. Yes I was posting at relaxed before, but actually they sent me here :-D I read and understand the Protocol now. I also know that I shouldn't skip shots. Just he was bouncing a lot. Now his numbers are more stable, but too high. I will try to fix that increasing the dose a little bit for a week.

Tomorrow we have appointment for blood test, and tests for pancreas and kidney. No idea what those be, but we will find out tomorrow. :?

Hi, Ana and welcome to Lantus Land.

I would also encourage you to consider increasing Bruno's dose by 0.25u rather than the tiny amounts you've been using to increase. Some cats can get "used" to high numbers and their bodies regard those higher numbers as their new normal blood glucose range. (This is called "glucose toxicity.") The value of the Tight Regulation Protocol is that the increases are at an amount and frequency that should prevent this from happening.

Are you out of the house during the day? I'm assuming you're at work since there are fewer tests during your AM cycle. If this is the case, you may want to consider getting a timed feeder so food is available for Bruno throughout the day when you're gone. Alternatively, you can freeze a mixture of cat food and water into portions (e.g., using an ice cube tray but any container that you can get the "catsickles" out of will work) and leave these out when you're gone from the house.

Just want to welcome you to Lantus Land...the best place for you and sweet little Bruno! The knowledge and support here are amazing, and we a love to help in any way we can, so ask any and all questions you need!

Hello Ana. I just want to echo Amy. I came here a just over two months ago when my Polly was put on Lantus. Finding this forum was a true blessing. Polly's being a little stubborn with her numbers and the people here have been wonderful with advice and encouragement. I'd be a frustrated frazzled and way-too-often discouraged cat-mom without all the help here. Welcome.

Marilyn and Polly

Hi Ana - i want to add my welcome to you and sweet Bruno!

that blue 153 a couple of nights ago is encouraging! he is responding to the insulin. as you get tests the picture will fill out.

i think i'd stay at this dose for at least 6 shots total before re-evaluating and changing it. The high numbers you saw yesterday look like a reaction to the 153, or possible he went lower in the afternoon before that. We call it a "bounce" when a low number causes the high number. Look at the 153, then follow the numbers straight up - to 378 and 410 the next morning. I can't tell if he's cleared the bounce yet - sometimes when they are bouncing they can bobble around high, up and down by 100 pts, but not getting back to where they started (somewhere around 153) yet. Here's a description of bouncing that might be helpful. New Dose Wonkiness & Bouncing.

A bounce can take 3 days to clear, which would be the night cycle of 7/6. I'd hold the dose until then and watch to see if you can figure out when that happens.

Don't be discouraged by it taking a while to get regulated. He looks pretty good - you're seeing numbers in the 100's on a very tiny dose of insulin. He didn't become diabetic overnight and it will take some time to get him regulated too. but be encouraged because he looks a little bouncy but overall pretty good.

glad to meet you! i hope you'll keep posting so we can get to know you and Bruno and teach you what you need to know to help your little buddy. cat_pet_icon

Welcome Ana and Bruno, I am new here as well and don't have any advice but you are absolutely at the best place for Bruno, I can tell you that much! These people are totally amazing, 24/7 and it is so comforting when dealing with this very difficult and scary disease.

Thank you to everyone!!! I already know this place is amazing! And it's quite encouraging to find so much support and good will from everyone. Already 2 days with 0.625u and even our numbers are still high, at least the bouncing seems to stopped. As per your suggestions, we will keep the those, for another couple of days.

Yes, Sienne, I work and sometimes crazy hours (more than 12-13 hours from the time I have to leave home and come back), but I try to keep up during the weekends and made a curve one of my free days once a week.

They were many things going on during the past 2 weeks, we switch to wet, I add water to his food now, from food changes he got sick, went to the vet, he has worms, so we need to deworm, will do that this week.

One week ago, we also started with 25u of B12 cyanocobalamin injected, is the only one I could find so far in Ukraine, order Zobaline, from abroad but I have't get it yet.

So, this are the news so far, I really really appreciate your postings and I feel so good just by reading all of them. Thank you! :-D
