Still High Don't Know What To Do...

Extremely worried about Catee. His numbers are high. Upper 300s & 200s. Please look at this spreadsheet. He is still eating Purina DM Dry, I've tried the Stella/Chewy... he would not touch it. Still trying EVO as well right next to the Purina.

He will seem to get better atleast at Nadir and then goes back up. My concern is him going into the 300s now. He is urinating and drinking more water.

As I've said in a previous thread, I am having a hard time giving him the insulin in his neck. Seems to be scar tissue built up. I am giving him 2.8 units now. After I insert the needle and push it will not go in. I take it out and try another spot with the same thing happening. So I started giving it to him towards the back. Not the scruff of the neck but lower down. Went well for a few days and I ran into the same thing last night.

I use the U100 needles. I am thinking of going to the U-40 to see if that would get the insulin into him better. Does anyone think that would be the best route to go? Not sure he will go for the U-40 needles as I had to switch to even give him the shot. My friend thinks the insulin is not getting into him.

The last time I took him to the vet back in November, he said there was some sugar in his urine, not much but there was nothing else wrong with him. To keep him at 250 preshot.... he is now going into the 300s.

Would appreciate advice as to what to do... really concerned about him.

About the shots. What size needles are you using? There are very thin needles -30/31 gauge. I wonder if they might affect him less. You are more likely to find them in U100 sizes, I think. Other than that, alternating the spots - the flank one shot, the other flank the next, nearer the neck the next - is the only thing I can think of.

I don't think his numbers are bad, considering the higher carb food. I like your sliding scale. He does move between yellow and pink preshots; that could be small bounces from green nadirs. You could push the dose up a smidge, watching that the nadir doesn't go below 50. I don't think I'd increase more than 0.2. Maybe I would be less reluctant to do that during the day when you can't monitor?

Thanks for your help. It is good to know his numbers are not so bad. The vet told me to keep going up on him but I hate getting into 3 units a day.

Yes the U100 needles he does not even pay attention to them. They are thinner gauge. The U40 are 29 gauge I believe and of course longer needle. I tried doing the flank this morning and he tried to bite me :) He doesn't like the lower half of his body being touched. I will keep trying different spots though.

In your opinion looking at the numbers, does it look like the insulin is going in.... working?

I will try going up on him again. I can try the U40 needle as well but not sure he will go for it.

How much is the max dose of insulin for a cat?

We generally start to worry about high dose conditions when they reach 5 units. But that is with wet low carb food as a diet.

Absolutely the insulin is working. He is dropping at least 50% on his nighttime cycles and sometimes more.
