Hey everyone!
Here's an update. We figured out that he needs about 1/2 cup of dry food to get his total calories per day.
Hubby is giving him 1/8 of a cup of dry food about an hour before insulin in the morning and in the night. And then since I am home during the summer I am feeding him various wet foods to see what he likes. I feel more comfortable knowing he is getting at least 1/2 his daily calories because we are trying to prevent DKA.
So far today we tried Wellness Turkey (he liked it!) and Sheba Chicken with Gravy (he liked it!)
Today his opinion on Weruva Steak Frites is *not so good*.
And today he didn't think much of Dave's Kidney food.

Currently his BG was 129. I gave him his nighttime allotment of dry food (Purina NF) and will measure his BG in an hour.
Hubby and I think that this is a good compromise --->>> Above 300, give 3 units. Between 200-300, give 2 units, and below 200 dont shoot. What do y'all think?
We also think he might be bouncing from a few days ago. How do y'all help a kitty get over a bounce?

I can't speak to dosing, as I use a different insulin, but if you are feeding him an hour before his shot time and then checking his BG numbers, your AMPS and PMPS are going to reflect a food spike rather than his actual BG. Best not to give any food two hours before AMPS/PMPS testing and shot times, safer for your kitty. :):):)

Ok, so I should test the blood sugar and then feed him? What if it's too low before food to shoot? And then continues to climb after feeding?
Plus, our vet says to give him food with the insulin. How do I know that the insulin won't drop him too fast, while he's digesting the food?
I guess I got all the timing wrong... is there an instructional link that could help?

Tried Cat In the Kitchen -- Chick Magnet tonight and he liked it! He licked up all the juice and even attempted to eat some of the nibble food. Progress?

Unfortunately, I misread the information -- and the amount of carbs in the Chick Magnet made him sick --- I feel so guilty!
I'm trying to gather more information because I seem to have lost my mind.....

Have you tried the canned Cats in the Kitchen flavors instead of the pouches? They are all diabetic safe! The favorites at our house are the Lamb burger-ini and Chicken frick-a-see. I also rotate in Funk in the Trunk occasionally, but it's not as loved as those two. La Isla Bonita is also a hit, but I try not to feed it too frequently because it's all fish.

Today I tried ChickenFrickASee and it was a no-go. He didn't even lick it. I smelled it. It seems really bland. Can I add any spices to it?
I am going to try to find a way to purchase the other CITK canned foods. I am hoping to only purchase one or two cans of each because I never know if he will want it.

They have store finder on their website, if that helps! http://www.weruva.com/stores.php I typically buy by the case on Amazon because it's the cheapest that way, but one of the pet food stores in my city does sell several of the flavors to experiment with. I'm thinking of trying out the "Fowl Ball" flavor because Bandit hasn't been super into the Funk in the Trunk lately. Don't give up! Just keep trying different ones until you get to something he likes. I would also check out the BFF cans--my kitty with stomach cancer loved that food even when she was really inappetent towards the end of her life.

I wouldn't add spices to cat food, but maybe you could try a little Fortiflora? It's a kitty probiotic, but it has the same flavoring in it that is used to flavor dry food, so it can help to "spice" up a food for a cat. It's a powder, and you just mix it in the food with a little water.

I've got some Weruva and CITK being shipped to us. There are less options for us because we have to have a low phosphorus count. (GAH)
Also, I have read that even though forti-flora is good for enticing them to eat, kitties with kidney problems shouldn't use it because of the extra vitamins or something.... Although, he is 19 years old. I wonder how much of an effect the "negative" part of fortiflora will have, in comparison to the "positive" effect of getting him to eat? (Something to ponder)

You don't have to use the whole packet if you're just using it for the flavor, you just sprinkle as much as you need to get him into the food. I don't think half a packet a day is going to make any difference whatsoever. I don't even think a whole packet a day would make much difference--he's 19, and it's more important that he eats well than any "negative" effects the Fortiflora might have (and I've never heard of any. I gave it for several years to my CKD cat and her kidney disease never progressed beyond early stage--she was the one who developed stomach cancer, and passed from that, not her CKD.)
