Since I screwed up royally this morning, neglecting to give his shot after testing and feeding, ohmygod_smile looks like we'll start the PZI tonight rather than waiting till morning. :o

There was a question as to whether he should be off the Levemir for a cycle before starting the PZI. Nothing to worry about, he didn't get the Lev. ohmygod_smile

Looks like it'll be a long night for me and Lucian, both of us being new to PZI.

Wish us luck and keep fingers crossed! :-D

Thanks Sue, for being Lucian's Guardian Angel in PZI. :YMHUG: o:-)

Yup! It ought to be interesting! Considering whether I should grab a nap or 2  .......might be a good idea.

But if all goes well, I'll have an unused pen of Levemir to be rid of, to someone who needs it. Gonna wait a couple/3 weeks and see what happens before I put it in the 'supply closet'. Although it is no longer working well for Lucian, it's still better than Lantus was for him. He's an oddball!

Welcome to PZI!

I was looking for your post. I hope it goes well.

What dose are you going to start on?

BJM and Carl! SOOOO glad you're here, was just getting ready to post.

Listen.........he didn't get his shot in AM, been keeping him down with R. Had R 2 hrs ago, he's now at 370 and I'm ready for PZI since the R starts to spike at +4 after the R is given. This way, the R will be on it's way out when the PZI takes effect.

Now, what dose for 370? Had planned 1U, but think he may need more.

10 mins till shot time.............

HELP!

Gracie starts about 300-330 and it seems like 1.2 units works for her (ProZinc, U-40 with U-100 syringes.) When I gave her 1.4 recently, she dropped to 80s pre-shot (oops)

1 unit is OK to start. I believe Sue suggested that too.

I work the plunger in and out before filling.
Push the plunger in firmly, then draw up the insulin.

Maybe check a +2 to see what is happening and if you'll need to stay up.

I have a vial and did the same way I do the R. You push in air equal to the dose you're taking out, then pull the dose. That's the way I've always done the R, it was the instructions I got.

I always pull the plunger in and out several times to lube the syringe.

I just couldn't snap the bubble into the center to eject it the first time, it kept going to the edge. Maybe I rolled the vial too much, made it bubble?

I plan to test every couple hours during the night. Didn't plan to start at night, but stuff happens.

You do the best you can with what you have. Did you see the link in Relaxed Lantus to the syringe discussions?

For some reason going really slow when drawing up the dose worked for me. That bubble sure is annoying though!

I'm sure I did at some point, I'll check it out. I just hate to waste, ya know?

The trial is actually 500 units, 5ml of U-100 PZI, so I was shocked and want it to last as long as possible.

Thanks Rachel, I'll make it a point to go slower with it. It does seem to be thicker than what I'm used to.

I didn't have a technique. I just depressed the plunger all the way, stuck it in the vial and drew a smidge past the dose line. If I had a bubble, I just tapped the syringe to get it towards the needle top. Then I squeezed a drop or two out to get "right on the line".

Question for anyone... I shot IM, not sub-q, but I've always wondered about the "airbubble" thing. Other than dose accuracy, is an air bubble that important? I mean, you're shooting into a "space" between the skin and "meat", right? A tiny bubble of air isn't going to cause a problem is it?
I used to have to stick the needle into muscle, then draw back a little to make sure I didn't see blood, to make sure I hadn't hit a vesel . Because air into a vessel would have been really bad.
But is air into the sub-q layer an issue?

From what I understand, a tiny, speck of a bubble is not an issue, but I had a .5 unit bubble!

Just curious as to why you had to shoot IM?

Long story, but in a nutshell...
Bob came home after three days DKA and got 200ml squids per day in the scruff. My vet believed he'd get more consistent absorption from IM shots in the back legs than from sub-q around the scruff. It was the first time she had someone try this, and it seemed to work. So even after he was done with fluids, we just kept doing it that way.

I'd never suggest someone try it unless their vet was totally supportive of that method, however. Since I joined here, I've only seen one other kitty who got IM shots and that was Lydia's Syd. Her vet suggested she do that, but Syd was a very special case. He had multiple other issues going on and lots of additional meds on a regular basis.

Wow, that's amazing, never heard of giving insulin that way.

You would think that Lucian had all sorts of medical issues, as erratic as he is, but we went through all the blood work and geriatric panel in Nov and the vet said he's in great shape for a 15 yo diabetic. All test in the normal range. But we still can't get him regulated, hence the switch to PZI in hopes of better results.

There was one bright side to shooting IM.
I might be the only person here that never did a fur shot

I've had a couple of those.

This morning, of course ohmygod_smile , was the 2nd time in just over a year, that I actually made his shot, tested, fed and went back to bed without giving his shot to him. I found it 2pm this afternoon, when he was HI, laying on my end table, right where I left it! ohmygod_smile

Been there! At least twice I drove to work trying to figure out why I had this nagging feeling that I was forgetting something. Then remembered...I got test and feed but forgot shoot!
