I got Pooper's back from Vet and he has 4 less teeth and a cleaner mouth. He also had an ear hematoma due to shaking his ear when I would poke it. It has been drained and hopefully stays clear. I decided to start the Lantus tonight and I started at 1 unit instead of 2. I know most of you would agree to start low and work my way up. I'm not sure if 1 unit will be enough but will see. Now is the typical NADIR point of Lantus in the 5-6 hour range? I will give him a shot every 12 hours correct? I know I probably won't see any results for a while due to depot of the insulin and that it stores in the body and then is slowly released into the pancreas for secretion. Does the effectiveness of the insulin last 12 hours or longer in the system? I know the Bovine insulin stayed in the system supposedly for atleast 12 hours and in some cases only 1 shot would be needed. However, that didn't apply to Poopers for now.

I forgot to mention, does Lantus keep the glucose steady throughout the day/night? I noticed with the Bovine that it remained steady for most of the time until evening.

Lantus generally has a nadir in the +5 to +7 hours post shot, however it can and may vary. Randomly testing in that period whenever you can, or doing a curve (serial glucose tests every 2 hours from pre-shot to pre-shot) can help you see where that tends to be for your cat.

There are several stickies at the top of the Lantus forum you'll want to read over.

Again it depends upon the cat. I give my Patches II about 1.4 units twice daily and can maintain her BG between 60 and 140 all day. Lantus can give a very flat curve
