Hi Everyone!
Well I was able to test, it took two pokes but I was able to get a good reading, it read 85 before we feed him. Now I am concerned about giving him his insulin. I know his numbers will probably go up but I give Lantus 4.5 units, and I am afraid this will drop him too low. If this were you would you give Murphy his insulin?
Thanks - Martie and Murphy

I don't use Lantus. I posted in that forum to get some eyes on your thread.

So glad you got a test! Giving 4.5 units on an 85 could have been disastrous.

Thank You soooo much!! I am hoping to get my Murphy back, he has been so lethargic and sleeping a lot lately and I think it is because it is I am giving him too much Insulin. I really appreciate all your help!!

Great job on getting testing with Murphy! Can you tell us when he was diagnosed? How much he weighs and whether he's at his ideal weight? What was his original insulin dose and how did you get to 4.5 units?

I read some of your original posts and you've recently switched to wet food. That can make a big difference in his insulin needs. Given the 85, I would skip tonight and we can try to figure out a better dose for him tomorrow.

One other thing to note, since you are giving Lantus, we typically test, then feed, then give insulin, all within about 15 minutes or so.

That switch to low carb canned food may drop the insulin dose a good 2 units and drop the glucose 100-200 mg/dL in some cases.

Well done with the home testing, Martie! :cat: And very well done indeed for catching that low preshot number.

Now that you're able to get real time BG data for Murphy you'll hopefully be able to get his dosing sorted out and then he'll start to feel much better.

Marti, any chance you could fill in any of your old data on the spreadsheet? It can help us figure out how appropriate the dose is if we can see when he was diagnosed, when dose changes took place, how big of an increment the dose increase was, and any blood sugar tests that you can provide.

I called my vet and asked for that info, knew the dates that I'd taken punkin to the vet, and could ballpark about what time (how many hours after the shot) the vet's blood sugar tests took place. All of that info that you can recreate can help us help you to move forward.
