I am so relieved after today's appointment to get Peter started on Lantus. My vet was so patient with my million questions and, best of all, Peter has really perked up after his subq fluids. I will be continuing to do fluids at home daily for the next 4 days. It is so great to have his appetite back!
Because he was not eating, I had reverted for the last few days to feeding about 110 calories of Wellness Core Original dry (the gold bag,the 11% one per Janet and Binky) and about 82 calories of a low carb 9Lives (terrible quality, I know, but he likes it) plus a couple tablespoons of plain tuna and tuna water. He was eating the dry but barely touching the wet, which was weird but I was just trying to get calories into him. Same with the 9Lives. He'd been eating canned Wellness but I tried the 9Lives to try to get something into him and he liked it.
After his fluids today he is acting great! I did his 1u today while he was chowing down on his 9Lives/wellness dry combo. Almost all his evening meal is gone!
Question is: now that his appetite seems to be back, tomorrow should I just go back to an all wet diet? I don't even know if he will like it. From his 6/4 diagnosis he was eating all wet (after a sort of hard transition week that involved a minor hunger strike) until about a week ago when I think his high glucose just got the better of him and he started feeling crappy and lost his appetite. If I had to guess, I'd say that tonight he seems more interested in his wet, less interested in his dry.
Part of me wants to transition now while it's early days and part of me thinks that since he's happily eating his wellness/9Lives combo, to leave that alone. Advice?
