I wanted to post an update & say she is still managing to stay under 130 without insulin! She was already on a drop dose, but I was looking for more green before I tried her off insulin. But after she got diagnosed with cancer, I made the decision to stop doing TR. This has all been really heartbreaking because she was doing so well with her diabetes. She's been getting poked and prodded a lot, and she is now on two other medications, so I couldn't stand the idea of continuing to test her.

Originally I said I would only put her back on the drop dose if her numbers started edging up to 150-200, which they haven't! So I'm happy to not have to worry about that.

This weekend was the first time she started to act sick. Right now she's on palladia and meloxicam. The tumor is on her lower jaw. She had two good weeks since being diagnosed, and she still has a very good appetite & wants to cuddle. But... if I start to feel like her mouth is hurting her all the time & she wants to stop, I'm going to stop.

You and Starbuck have been on my mind. That is a blessing not to have her diabetes complicating things right now. Very happy she's been eating and cuddling--so important for both of you. I'm deeply sorry that you're going through this, and wish you comfort and many more cuddles together.

Your choices are both sensible and caring.
Give your little girl a gentle cuddle from me, and enjoy some quality time with her.

Sending prayers for you both

I'm so sorry about Starbuck's diagnosis. We have seen that sometimes kitties with cancer go into remission, so it's not surprising. Mine didn't , but they were contrary little guys. ;) I think you are handling the issue very well, with your baby's best interests in mind. :bighug:

One thing that does concern me is the fact that your vet prescribed Meloxicam. There is a black box warning on it about the danger of renal failure:
Warning: Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death. Do not administer additional doses of injectable or oral meloxicam to cats.
I know that, with the cancer, you probably feel that this won't be an issue for Starbuck, but I did want to share this info in case someone else reading this doesn't know about the dangers of using this drug for any length of time.

Thanks, I'm aware. I think they prescribe it because it has the best chance of reducing inflammation/pain in her face, knowing it's a tossup how many weeks she has left anyway. I'm fine with it but I would be more worried if they wanted me to give it after surgery she was expected to recover from, you know?
