Hi I’m new here, my cat Marcy just got diagnosed a few weeks ago. She just turned 5, post DKA, she’s started on 1 unit prozinc. Every time I’ve tested her so far she’s been over 300, I tested her this morning and she was at 99. Waited an hour and tested again, now she’s at 131. Should I still give her insulin at a smaller dose? I have to leave for work in 40 minutes or so.

So sorry you didn't get an answer earlier!

We really need to get you set up with our spreadsheet to record your kitty's numbers and your "Signature" filled out so that all our questions we'd ask are already answered. Lots of helpful info in this "Help us to help you" page. If you need help setting up a spreadsheet, feel free to contact me or @Bandit's Mom . It's no trouble and we're happy to do it!

Did you go ahead and shoot, skip or give a reduced dose?

Hey, yeah I haven’t figured out how to get the spreadsheet up yet. I’m going to try to get it done in the next couple days. I tested her again right before I had to leave for work and she shot up to 330, so I gave her her normal dose.

Hi Katy and Marcy and welcome.
Can you tell me how long since Marcy had the DKA?
How is her appetite now?
Are you testing daily for ketones in the urine

Recently, I think it’s been about 2 weeks since. She was hospitalized shortly to stabilize her. She eats double her usual amount, at least 2 full 5.5 ounce cans. She’s always been food motivated, getting her to eat has never been too much of an issue. Do you have any idea when the appetite goes back to normal? I haven’t been checking for ketones, when she was released from the hospital they said the ketones in her urine were down, should I still be testing for them?

Hi Katie
Yes you should be testing every day for ketones in the urine so soon after DKA. Even when you are sure she has fully recovered you should test at least a couple of times a week and more often if she is off her food, is unwell, lethargic or has diarrhoea as she is prone to them.
You can buy a bottle of Ketostix or DiaKetosix from a pharmacy or Walmart and follow the directions.

It is really good you are feeding twice as much as normal. Post DKA cats need 1 and a half times as much food as normal to help prevent Ketones from coming back.
So keep feeding Marcy as you are. Are you leaving her snacks for during the day when you are at work?

Don’t skip any doses of insulin, as insulin is also really important in stopping ketones returning. If the BG is too low to shoot…..stall, dont feed and test again in 20 minutes to see if the BG is rising. And post and ask for help.

Is she drinking well. Fluids are also really important following DKA.

If you could get your signature filled out….it will appear below all your posts and will tell us about Marcy…that would be helpful..also say post DKA in the signature. Instructions are in the link Chris gave you in post 2.
@Bandit's Mom will be along soon I am sure and she can help you with the spreadsheet. If you can add all the BG data you have so far, that would be very helpful.
Keep asking questions.

Hi @Katie & Marcy ! Welcome to FDMB! :-)

I can set up your spreadsheet and signature. Will send you a PM with the details I need. Look for it in the Inbox at the top right corner of this page.

Okay I’ll pick up some sticks! And yeah she gets snacks, my dad works from home and likes to feed her, I showed him how to give her food from her morning leftovers. She’s still drinking a lot, sleeps next to the water dish sometimes. But she’s looking a lot better everyday, she has more energy. Thanks for all of the help, that’s why I posted originally, I thought I read somewhere not to skip doses post DKA.

How are things going with Marcy? how is the appetite? And are you still testing for ketones?
I would love try and get some tests in during the pm cycle if you can .

Hey, yeah she’s doing well, she had her first checkup back with the vet and he bumped her dose. Even though her sugar still seems uncontrolled she’s been putting on weight, she’s almost back to her normal weight. Still eating twice as much. I’ve only tested the ketones once so far, because she conveniently left a little puddle outside the box. I can get some more pm tests in, I’m usually up 4 hours after she gets her pm shot. Just been having bad luck with getting blood lately.
