Hello all,

My name is Natalie. My cat Pepper was diagnosed with diabetes a few weeks ago. I started her on Lantus about a week and a half ago. The vet I went to recommended I give her 2 units, and feed her science diet. Luckily my friend Courtney (who has a diabetic cat) told me to try a much smaller dose. Boy, am I glad I listened to her, because when I gave her 1/2 a unit for the first time, she ended up going hypo (her blood sugar was 32!). Now I have her on a quarter unit, which is a really tricky measurement to perfect. I switched her to wet food, which she loves.

When I got her blood work done originally at the vet, not only was her blood glucose high, but so was her white blood cell count. They tested her urine for a uti, and said she didnt have one. She has a tooth that needs attention, so I wonder if treating that might help her blood sugar. Another possibility is kidney or liver issues.

The point of this post is to ask if anyone on this website knows anyone in St Louis, MO who can recommend a good vet who is more familiar with feline diabetes than my current vet. Maybe also I trustworthy vet whom they trust for dental work (in case she needs the bad tooth pulled). I love my little Pepper, and I want the best for her. I guess if anyone has any comments, questions or general recommendations- its all appreciated by this newbie!

Thanks,

Natalie

Welcome Natalie and Pepper,

My daughter and son in law live in St. Louis. I asked her since they have 4 cats. She recommended Dr. Kronk at Creve Coeur Animal Hospital. That is not her current vet now. One of her cat's, Chandler, had some intestinal issues and Dr. Kronk was great! She doesn't know how he is with diabetes in cats or teeth extractions. I do remember when this was all going on with Chandler, my daughter couldn't say enough good things about the vet office help and the other vets. Hope this helps.

See my signature link Vet Interview Topics to help you select a vet you can work with.

If you do a http://maps.google.com search on"veterinarian near [enter your address]", you will see nearby vets who may be candidates. Combine that with the questions and maybe some onlline reviews to help you winnow out your possibilities.
