Squeak has been very sick...

Last week, Squeak started throwing up - yellow bile and had diarrhea. I called the vet and got him some drontal (worm meds) and gave him. That seemed to do the trick for that illness but he STOPPED eating. SO unlike my boy. Normally he's a vacuum cleaner! I took him to the vet and he was labeled a 'vicious cat.' He was so very sick and didn't feel well. Anyway, they gave him some Sub Q fluids and that made him feel better but their blood machine was broken so I had to take him back for a blood panel. Everything was perfect except his BS and it was over 500. He's been on 1.5 Units twice a day but the vet increased him to 2.5 units twice daily. He's doing better but still NOT eating right. I'm feeding him some dry (Deli cat, just anything) just to get him to eat. I've been feed him FF classics and Friskies pates but he just licks the juice and won't eat it. I give him dry because he WILL eat some of it and has to eat with the insulin. Has anyone else ran into a situation like this? He's purring and feeling much much better - but still has an appetite problem. Thanks!

Was he tested for pancreatitis? That is sometimes the reason for inappetite. Does his tummy seem sore when you touch it? See more info here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=83108&hilit=Pancreatitis

Yes, I would feed him whatever he will eat. Sometimes baby food (no spices or onions) works.. He needs to eat so he doesn't get DKA. If he won't eat anything, I'd ask the vet about a feeding tube. You can do this at home.

Thanks Sue; The vet did a complete blood panel but I think the pancreatitis test is different. She said everything looked great apart from his diabetes. I'm going to call now and ask about it and see if she thinks that could be it. I never thought of that. I take him back Sat. for a curve. I can't check him at home, I've tried and he won't sit still and I can't get blood out of his ears. He's not sore to the touch. I've kind of mashed on his belly and around before I took him and he never complained. In fact, he's gained 2 lbs. since he was diagnosed with diabetes in January '13. I'll let you know what I find out and thank you SO very much.

I called the vet and that test WAS a part of the blood panel and it was negative. Where do we go from here? He's still not eating right - not like himself. I'm really scared and worried.

Yes, I tried baby food - he decided NOT to like it but in the past, devoured it. Anyway, it seems he's daily making progress. Last night he had some roast beef from Kroger - yeah, with the seasonings! You just never know about him - typical cat. He goes back to the vet tomorrow for a BS test. It should be lower with the increased dosage. I set him out a complete smorgasbord. When I come home, I try to remember what I put in which bowl to see what he ate the most of. When I left the other morning, I counted TWELVE bowls of different food ranging from dry kibble, canned cat food, to people food. But he's back to purring and following me around. I even set a bowl of dry food beside his water bowl in his "bathroom" (extra bedroom) and it's usually about gone when I get home at night. So things seem to be doing better. I think he was just sicker than I thought. Thanks for all your help and well wishes!

Ask them to take a look at his teeth. The only time I had an issue with not eating (with Mullet, my civvie) it turned out to be due to a broken tooth that had caused a hole and infection on his tongue.

Thanks Carl & Bob; They did look at his teeth - one vet said they looked pretty bad and the other vet said they didn't look 'that' bad. He goes back tomorrow for a blood sugar test (I can't test him at home - vampire ears and he won't sit still - he's a wildcat) and I have a 'list' of things to ask; this being one of them. Thanks for responding. I don't know where we'd be if it weren't for this wonderful group of people. Bless you and everyone that has cared.

Took Squeak back to the vet Sat. His blood sugar level at 11 am ( he had 2.5 units of PZI) at 7:30 was 436. His ears look good from his ear infection and she wants to increase his insulin to 3 unites twice daily and in a few days, move him up to 3.5 units twice daily and bring him back next Sat. for another blood test. I was SO stupid. He loves Deli Cat and he's been eating that (just to make sure he DOES eat) and I spotted Kitten Chow. I remember how he loved that as a kitten so I got him a box and left him a bowl in the kitchen and in his bedroom next to his water bowl and this morning, God love him, he'd been SO sick - vomiting and severe diarrhea. I knew better - just not thinking and wanting him to eat - stupid Mommie. Anyway, I only gave him 1 unit this morning and some canned food. I leave him at 7 am and won't be home until 6 tonight. Anyway, seems like we are back where we started from - he was doing SO good. Purring and playing now this. Anyway, please keep us in your prayers and your good cat vibes. Thanks again, Lisa and Squeak!
