Just sending an update on Splitzie. She had an appointment tonight, and the vet put her on Lantus, which is great as I have some left over from my doctor taking me off of it. He said to try 1 unit once a day. So, we'll see how that works. Not sure after reading many things on the forums about it being a 12 hour insulin. Heading over to the Lantus forums next.
Everyone has been great and very supportive, and will need it. I am going on a weekend trip with my son through his school, was set up months ago or else I wouldn't be going. The vet found a mass... Not sure what it is yet, hopefully will know from the blood work done tonight. I'm going to miss her like crazy and then not sure if I want to know the results or not. If it's fatal, I don't really want to know since it will take away from my son's and my weekend. I don't do much with him and want to make this awesome. But kind of want to know. Although we'll be back Sunday night, and picking her up from my mom's on Monday.
Anyways, keep her in your thoughts this weekend, please. Here's hoping the news will be good. I will post on Monday the results.

Kathy and Splitzie

Dear Kathy, and, of course, you too, sweet Splitzie,

Is your Lantus still fresh? If not, please check the Supply Closet forum or scroll down on the Health forum as DCIN was recently posting they had some Lantus pens still available (you'll need a prescription). And, yes, Lantus works best with a 12/12 schedule -- meaning one shot every 12 hours. The Lantus forum can explain it well, so that's a good place to go.

Bless your mom for looking after your sweet girl while you're away with your son. Hope you both have the awesome weekend you're hoping for.

And, please know, I'll be keeping Splitzie in my thoughts and prayers. Please update us when you get the results back from her vet, okay?

Love and hopeful hugs for you all,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

I have 2 unopened bottles of Lantus, and then I still have one refill left at the pharmacy which I will get once she runs out, or they get old. S, should keep her for a bit.

And thank you. She will need all the thoughts and prayers she can get.

Do you have 30u (3/10cc) syringes? Make sure your mom knows what the tiny dose of 1u looks like.

Cats metabolism is faster than humans -- hence what may be a once a day insulin for people needs to be twice a day for cats.

That's what I keep hearing about Lantus. I was kinda thinking of 1/2 twice a day. But will talk to the dr first.
Yes, I have some of the 3/10 syringes.
Talked to my mom this morning, Splitzie's sugar was 357 last night, she got her shot and was 99 this morning and I guess she wants to eat. :-D She hasn't been eating as much and hasn't even seemed to want food. That was great news when I heard that this morning. :RAHCAT :thumbup

cool - if she got that response to 1 unit, then a reduction to 0.5u is a good idea.

99 is a great "normal" number - if you can -- test her blood sugar about 6 hours after shot time -- because she could be going a lot lower than 99 in mid-cycle.

gotta be very careful with the "not eating". Diabetic Ketoacidosis can occur - this extremely painful condition requires hospitalization and 24 hour care. Bills can go astronomical in a hurry.

No eating = no shot or reduced shot depending on Blood sugar

We recommend a "Don't Shoot" below 200 at shot time for newbies -- as you and your cat become used to the insulin and document / log blood sugar data over time -- the "Don't Shoot" number can go lower. The main object is keeping the kitty SAFE.

For example - I've been treating Tiggy, my diabetic cat, for over 2 years. I have data proving that I can safely give him his shot if he is 99 at injection time presuming he is acting "normal".
