Spilling glucose in urine

Hi all,

Our 15 year old kitty has had diabetes for about one year, and is on Vetsulin. My main concern is that she is spilling lots of glucose in her urine, but is only urinating once every 12 hours, and isn't drinking much at all. She has been this way since I stopped her dry diabetic kibble about 8 weeks ago and she now eats only canned tuna in spring water, plus diabetic wet food (Royal Canin) x5 small meals a day, (she really only licks the jelly off the wet food though).

She had bloods done yesterday as she has been quite unwell for 2 days with fever, and has also had weight loss of 600g over the past 6 weeks. The blood-work came back normal. She is lethargic, not eating much and last night made small whining noises occasionally. The vet gave her an anti-inflammatory injection with pain relief, plus oral antibiotics for 4 days. Said it could be viral or bacterial.

Her BSL's sit between 13-22mmol / L usually. * We have reduced her insulin with the change in diet, so she is on 2.5u twice daily usually, but since she has been sick this has varied from none, to 1u.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this. I am perplexed as to why she isn't drinking / urinating more with such a high amount of glucose in her urine. There was a small trace of blood but no protein.

Thanks in advance.

My initial thought is a possible UTI. Is she trying to urinate often but nothing is coming out? Do you have any more current BG data to know it's a lot of glucose in her urine or did you just notice litter sticking to her paws a lot? I'm sorry I cannot comment on anything else, hopefully more experienced members will chime in.

I was also told by my Vet that diabetic cats can produce more urine even if they don't drink a whole lot.

Thanks Yong; She doesn't appear to ever strain or have problems in her litter box - I watched her today.
I got a clean catch of her urine and did a dipstick which the vet also did later on from the sample, showing the highest reading possible for spilled glucose.

And that was a glucose strip not a ketone one? Are you able to get a BG blood test from her ear to post instead of just a glucose strip?
