Spikes in AM levels

Hello,
It has been quite a while since I've posted about Howie. We have been in maintenance mode for many many months until recently. His BGs are spiking high in the AMs but are lower at dinner time. He is also taking almost 2 hrs to eat and his eyes have been weeping brown stuff for about the last 6 weeks. I took him for a check-up yesterday (no labs) and the vet thought everything looked great and no reason for expensive labs at this time. His weight has been creeping up after a steady loss. Two weeks ago he was at 10.6 but yesterday he was at 10.3 lbs.

I've been increasing his insulin to try and even him out but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Any ideas on other things to monitor or think about? I don't know if this is his acro or just the aging process with diabetes. I don't know if I keep increasing his insulin due to his AM levels? I can't get any earlier AM pre-shots and am doing my best to get more +10-11 tests before dinner depending on my work schedule.

I appreciate any thoughts!

I've been wondering how Howie is doing. Glad to see this post, and that he's gaining weight which is a good thing.

Without more mid cycle tests, or even before bed tests, I can't make any suggestions on dosing. Other than to say you've been increasing him by larger amounts than we would on smaller doses and increasing without knowing nadirs. Less than a month ago 3 units looked good, but testing has dropped off since then and increases have been larger and not based on how low he's going on the dose. I definitely would not increase based on AM levels. That could be a bounce from going lower at night. But without data, who knows?

Hi Wendy, thanks for the quick response. I have gotten lax on testing as he was doing so good for so long and he is getting crankier with more tests. Only the reality...not a great excuse! I'll do better at getting more tests when I'm home. The previous green levels at 3 units was when I was out of town and had a critter sitter. The dose increases are by half units as those are the only syringes I have at the moment.
