my new little kitty sapphire - who i adopted at the end of sept just 10 days after i lost my beloved sophie  - is coming up to six months old and i want to get her spayed asap. i was intending to do so before xmas but i broke my wrist badly - in four places - and its been a struggle to just do the basics. my arm is still heavily plastered and it will be well into feb before it comes off, followed by physio. so i cant drive until then.

i know it is better to get the spay done sooner rather than later so my dilemma is whether to get a taxi to and from the vet this week maybe - at added expense at a time when i am not earning due to my injury - or wait till i can drive saffy there myself, which i would rather do. i have jst spoken to the vet recpetionist who said another month wouldnt make much difference, if saffy is not going out and cant get pregnant - which she isnt - but when i asked about the benefts of early spaying to reduce the risk of organ disease she just looked at me blankly

like everyon here i want the best for my baby but cant decide what to do here. what do you think? what would you do?

here's a picture:

thanks i advance fr any thoughts

A beautiful tux girl. I think there is very little risk waiting another month to get her spayed. Just make sure she does not get loose.

I'd wait. Most of the time routine surgeries of any kind are fine, whether it's spay/neuter or a dental, but to just to be safe, why not wait until you can drive in case something happens and you feel you want a vet to see her the day after.

Like Larry said, make sure she's inside until the spay.

Has Sapphire had her first heat cycle yet? From what I understand, spaying prior to the first heat cycle reduces the risk of developing mammary cancer later in life.

many thanks for yr thoughts and reassurances. its really helpful to be able to get yr comments as no-one in 'real life' gets what i am asking!

yes, i had understood the same thing about spaying before the first heat cycle reducing therisk of mammary cancer - thats what prompted me to post. i dont think she has had her first cycle yet so npw wd be a good time but as explained i am stuck and wondering what difference a few more weeks is likely to make. maybe jennifer's comment about waiting in case i have to go backsoon after is what i should bear in mind... sigh. this wrist injury is causing me so many problems

thank you again

Could a neighbor or friend take the cat to the vet for you? Or maybe there's some sort of pet transport near you? There's a pet sitting service here who will also take pets to the vet, groomers, play groups, etc for you. If not, waiting a month would be ok as long as you keep your cat inside.

well trouble is most of my friends live a way off and it would be an 8am start at the vet - neighbours have been helping me wi shopping etc but i dont think they see taking a cat to the vet as something they really want to do. and yes there are organisations that would help but they are in business to make money and i want to avoid paying if i can, i;m not earning. obviously wd if it was an emergency but i guess this isnt.

What if one of your friends could actually host the cat overnight, then take it to the vet?
No boarding fee, a (possibly) shorter trip to the vet in the morning for the cat, and then a late afternoon pickup to bring her back to you.
