Hi good people:

I've found that I'm not much of a forum poster and sometimes I get burned out even reading here, but I was feeling strong enough to come here today to give an update on Sparkle and my household.

First, I wanted to add some information that I did not share in my intro. In the last 5 months, I have lost 4 of my cat children: Buster (16 yo), Bits (7 yo), Brownie (13 yo) and now Blaze (10 yo) and found out that Sparkle has diabetes, which we are working with.

While I have 30 years volunteer rescue experience caring for the tiniest kitten, to the oldest cat, to abuse kitties, amputees and many, many medical conditions, I got burned out 2 years ago and now only take care of my household. The emotional pain I am in after these last few months is tremendous. Sparkle's care is actual a high point every day because I feel we are going forward and I'm making a difference.

Diabetes is nothing like cancer. Blaze had an aggressive nasal tumor. A frickin nasal tumor! Cancer. Healthiest looking cat you could imagine and yet I lost him last week. I can't fight cancer.

I've changed my life completely to care for Sparkle, MR. Cranky Pants. My current cat household, 10 of my own kids and 3 boarding cats have also had to make adjustments. Mainly in the eating department and I am so very grateful that it has gone very well and there has been very little complaining.

I can't do the spreadsheet. It is just overwhelming to me so I record everything the old fashioned way, with paper and pen. Sparkle is on Lantus 1 u 2x a day. He is not regulated, but the improvements since he started insulin are tremendous. He looks like a different cat. However, he has severe oral problems which my specialist vet is concerned may be cancer (I hate that word). She is pushing for a biopsy, but I don't have the money for that and to me, it doesn't matter. Sparkle is eating and walking and using the box and interacting with the other kitties and is a great patient. Sure is drools all over himself, wears a lot of his food too, but he loves his baths so we are good.

The 3 boarding cats should be leaving in a month or so. It was a situation where someone needed to go into the hospital and refused to go until she knew her cats would have a safe home. It was to last one month. That was over a year and a half ago. Their Mom visits, sends money and has gotten her health and life back together with a few setbacks along the way. Great cats, great Mom, but they need to go live with her now. I need to give everything to my kids. I have learned in the most painful way over the last few months how quickly they can leave you.

I feel deeply for every person on this board who loves their cat(s) so much to be here. I send you all strength and positive energy and prayers.

A faithful reader and Cat Mom

Welcome.

- Most of us here test or cats blood glucose at home using a human meter. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. I myself do not use the Google document's spreadsheet. Too slow to use, especially when y have more than one diabetic. I use a simple Number spreadsheet on my iPad.
- If yu need any help with dosing just list BGs in the form of:
AM/PM PS. That is the BG reading in morning or evening
For BGs between shots (dose is based on lowest BG between shots) you use the the form of=X (where x is hours after shot) followed by the BG reading. For example. +4 235 means that 4 hours after shot BG was 235.
- What are you feeding? A low-carb canned is best. No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

Hi Sparkles mom. I'm so sorry for the loss of your 4 fur babies. To lose so many in such a short time must be devastating. I'm glad that Sparkle is doing better. You're right this diabetes thing is doable and you are a great mom for making the adjustments and treating Sparkle. If you want to do a spreadsheet, there are members here that will set it all up for you (I couldn't do it myself either). Then all you have to do is type in a number. It really does make it easier to see the trends. Good luck and :bighug:

I don't have an ipad or Smart phone so that is probably why using a spreadsheet seems hard to me. I am not a tech person at all. I'm probably more a live in a hut or cave with no electricity kind of person. I do agree that being able to see it laid out neater than on multiple pieces of paper would be helpful. I'll try the spreadsheet again. The one I set up won't let me input anything. If there is someone who could help me. I'd appreciate it too.

I already do the home testing and have switched everyone to canned food.

Sharon: Thank you for your understand words. I think I am just in a daze about the losses. Sparkle keeps me present since I have to do so much for him. Sometimes the other cats give me comfort and sometimes they make me feel the losses more intensely. Beau is a snuggler and he looks exactly like Blaze so it is a real mind mess when I look at him.
The costs of feeding 13 cats an all canned diet is crazy, but even though I am on a small fixed income, I will do anything for the cats that I have made a life commitment too. I do not do crazy over the top medical care. I can't afford it and after having gone down that road many times in the past, I don't believe it is a kind thing for the cats we love. I let go easier now. I believe it is the ultimate act of love. I promised them a great life so they deserve a great passing too, before too much suffering.

Sparkle seems his regular cranky self today. It is Sparkle time now. Time to test and feed and give him his meds and supplements. I'm hoping to get a bath in today for him. That always seems to make him feel better. I think it is all the snuggle time in warm towels...lol

You are a great cat mom and an inspiration. I like and respect that you have gone down so many different paths and you have decided what works the best for you and for your babies. You obviously are an incredibly compassionate person to help with the foster kitties for so long. It will feel good to be able to focus on the cat children that surround you, now.

I identify with you because I currently have 12 cats. They are absolutely the delight of my life, and I do as much as I can for all of them. Six of them are 17 + years old, and that has been hard… Because they have a variety of conditions.

I have lost four in the last two years and it's always, always, always agonizing. And I agree with you that cancer is the absolute worst. Last summer I lost a beautiful 16 year old calico girl that I had had for 15 years to something called carcinomatosis. I had never heard of it. It means "cancer everywhere". So sad.

Sparkle obviously has a wonderful mom in you... and this board is a great place to discuss his care. It is really fun to focus completely on them, isn't it? Please enjoy that time to the fullest, and Good Luck!

Yeah another truly crazy cat lady with a multitude of old babies. It is so incredibly hard though. When I came back from the vet's after losing Blaze, as I was opening the door to all those kitty faces, it just struck me like a hammer "You will lose them all". It is what we sign up for, but we don't "know" it when we are overjoyed with that bundle of softness and absolute cuteness when we bring home a new family member.
You too keep up the good work and keep the joy in your mind, even when the heart is full of pain. You rock!

I'm so sorry for all your losses and you too Cara. They really do steal our hearts and then take a piece of it with them when they leave us but it's all so worth it. It's amazing how distracting andcomforting it can be to have to put so much attention on our sugar kids. I only have 3 sets of paws running around here and they can keep me busy (one lap for 3 can be problematic at times :woot:) so I have to commend you folks who have a larger furry family to tend to.

I really think seeing your readings for Sparkle will help you and if you need or want some assistance, it will be critical for folks here to be able to see what's going on with Sparkle to provide you any guidance. I'm going to tag someone to help you get the spreadsheet set up.

@Marje and Gracie Can you give a hand here setting up a spreadsheet? Please and thank you. :)

Absolutely I can. It will only take me a few minutes to do. And of course, you're welcome, Linda.

@Sparkle ...I'm going to send you a private message. In the upper right corner of this page, look for "inbox" and click on it and you'll have a message from me in just a few minutes.

Sparkles mom, hello. So sorry for your losses in such a short time. How wonderful of you to cat sit for another for so long. I can't imagine not having one. There was never ever a time there wasn't one in my house. They are all unique and provide comfort and amusement in their own way. With 10 you must have a lot of laughs to help you through. Would love to hear more when you can manage. Welcome and we'll see you around.

All these replies help me so much. I think I went through a time when I just could not bear reading about other people's cat kids when Blaze got sick so fast and then I had to let him go.
Yes, 13 is a lot! Some days just too much. They make me laugh the most when they are piled all around in front of the furnace. I call them the little toaster pastries.
Will get to that spreadsheet help soon... can we teach Sparkle? I'm sure Mr. Cranky Pants would love to do notations ^. .^

Wow Sparkles mom, I didn't realize you had 13 cats. I have 14, so I know what your going through there. It is hard getting them all on canned food, I still have a few kibble hold outs, so I have to stand guard a lot to make sure Colin doesn't get any. I give them fairly low carb kibble, but its still too high for Colin. One of mine is 23, and I think his time is drawing near. Like you, I can't afford over the top medical care, and don't always think it's the best for our babies. I do what I can and love them totally. That's as much as anyone can do. Good luck with the spreadsheet, it's really not as difficult as it seems(even for those of us that are technologically challenged)

Hey Sharon, glad to meet another full house Mom. I looked at Colin's spreadsheet and it is just like when I look at anyone else's, I just don't have a clue what it means. Colin's numbers look like Sparkles... at least to me... All over. I don't think I understand how insulin works. Will need to go reread that. Boarding kitties Mommy is coming soon, after that hope to get spreadsheet set up with the help that has been offered. Sending LOTS and LOTS of kitty kisses.

I don't think any of us understand how insulin works! ;)

Honestly… Living systems are so incredibly complex and there are so many different inputs to what can cause glucose to be high or low and insulin is only one of those inputs. Every day is a different day, and every cat reacts differently. I think in the end all you can really do is try to understand how your cat does at different dosages, and then realize that each day will be different even with that cat.

This message board is mostly about support and sharing good ideas that have worked for each one of us. And then there's the struggle to just understand what's happening with our cats, that we also share!

Hey Sparkles Mom. Here is a good explanation of how to read and use the Spread Sheet. If this doesn't make sense, let me know as I have another explanation which might resonate with you better.

On the spreadsheet... It's really not hard!

AMPS is the AM Pre-shot test (always test before shooting to make sure they're high enough to give insulin)...then the U column is for "Units" (how much you gave)

The +1, +2, +3, etc are for how many hours since shooting...so +2 is 2 hours after the AM shot, +9 is 9 hour after, etc.....Since we're all over the world here, saying "he was at 148 at 8pm" doesn't tell us anything...we need to know how long since his last shot

At the end of a 12 hour cycle, it's PMPS time! (PM Pre-shot) and the whole thing starts over

Hi B & B
I do get the spread sheet in that way, it is more interpreting our data that I don't get. Thanks to another member I can now start inputting Sparkle's data and I hope I can see better what is going on with him. He is going to see 2 vets on Tuesday morning so I need to get on this ASAP. I'm just so tired. Keep up the great messages and wonderful support. Everyone is so awesome here.
Pepper and Sparkle

Good morning Pepper. Lots of us have problems interpreting the data, especially in the beginning! All you have to do is plug in your numbers, then post in the Lantus forum asking for help. They will be glad to explain to you what is going on and how to dose accordingly. :bighug:

Hi Pepper, I once lost my 2 dogs, Annie, 10yrs and Mocha, 13 1/2 years, both Labs, exactly 30 days apart. Annie to cancer and Mocha to a stroke. It was awful. I currently have 6 cats and one dog.

Right now I'm wrestling with the decision as to whether not its time to let one of my civies go to heaven. I know she's not a happy kitty anymore, and breathing has become quite difficult. She will only eat tiny amounts so I syringe feed her 3-4 times a day, which she HATES! As of yesterday, she won't open her left eye. She had sugary about 7-8 months ago to remove laryngeal polyps, some of them tested positive for pre-cancerous squamous cell cancer. So we're very suspicious that's the problem now. I guess I just have to get it set right in my mind and my heart.

While I know that eventually I'll lose them all, I, like everyone else here, will just have to be happy to have them while we do, and do the best for them that we can.
