Hi good people:
I've found that I'm not much of a forum poster and sometimes I get burned out even reading here, but I was feeling strong enough to come here today to give an update on Sparkle and my household.
First, I wanted to add some information that I did not share in my intro. In the last 5 months, I have lost 4 of my cat children: Buster (16 yo), Bits (7 yo), Brownie (13 yo) and now Blaze (10 yo) and found out that Sparkle has diabetes, which we are working with.
While I have 30 years volunteer rescue experience caring for the tiniest kitten, to the oldest cat, to abuse kitties, amputees and many, many medical conditions, I got burned out 2 years ago and now only take care of my household. The emotional pain I am in after these last few months is tremendous. Sparkle's care is actual a high point every day because I feel we are going forward and I'm making a difference.
Diabetes is nothing like cancer. Blaze had an aggressive nasal tumor. A frickin nasal tumor! Cancer. Healthiest looking cat you could imagine and yet I lost him last week. I can't fight cancer.
I've changed my life completely to care for Sparkle, MR. Cranky Pants. My current cat household, 10 of my own kids and 3 boarding cats have also had to make adjustments. Mainly in the eating department and I am so very grateful that it has gone very well and there has been very little complaining.
I can't do the spreadsheet. It is just overwhelming to me so I record everything the old fashioned way, with paper and pen. Sparkle is on Lantus 1 u 2x a day. He is not regulated, but the improvements since he started insulin are tremendous. He looks like a different cat. However, he has severe oral problems which my specialist vet is concerned may be cancer (I hate that word). She is pushing for a biopsy, but I don't have the money for that and to me, it doesn't matter. Sparkle is eating and walking and using the box and interacting with the other kitties and is a great patient. Sure is drools all over himself, wears a lot of his food too, but he loves his baths so we are good.
The 3 boarding cats should be leaving in a month or so. It was a situation where someone needed to go into the hospital and refused to go until she knew her cats would have a safe home. It was to last one month. That was over a year and a half ago. Their Mom visits, sends money and has gotten her health and life back together with a few setbacks along the way. Great cats, great Mom, but they need to go live with her now. I need to give everything to my kids. I have learned in the most painful way over the last few months how quickly they can leave you.
I feel deeply for every person on this board who loves their cat(s) so much to be here. I send you all strength and positive energy and prayers.
A faithful reader and Cat Mom
