Well, I've been sounding out vets in town to see who does what, who is okay with home testing, who thinks that prescription food is the be all and end all, etc on diabetes. So far, no good. The only person I could find that even agreed on home testing was one tech at the vets office we go to now. The last vet I talked to didn't mind home testing but wanted me to have the Accutest meter for cats. He thinks human meters are not even good enough to test with. He is all in favor of doing the curves at home though. He thinks the frucostmine test is one that has it's merits. He does them very seldom though. He said he would probably not be the vet for me. I told him I just needed to find someone I could get along with. He did say if your cat won't eat the diet food, by all means feed something they will eat, like Fancy Feast or Wellness. He did say that wheat gluten was protein, okay but it's still grain! So, the DH will just have to take Sam in and deal with our vet. Whenever I go in, I will ask for a different vet, not the one I don't like. He also told me that right before a shot is the worst time to test. You know the insulin is wearing off and it's wrong to expect any kind of a good number. The best thing he said to do was to look in the litter box. If the volume of pee has gone down you are making progress. ohmygod_smile

Kudos to you for realizing that he is giving ridiculous advice. Hopefully you'l be able to find someone willing to work with you.

I think once you present them with a detailed copy of your spread sheet they will take you much more seriously. Maybe even teach them a thing or two. ;)

Yeah, he is an older vet, been around since I was in my 30's and that 20 years ago. I have one more to try, she was my vet a long time ago when Strider was alive with CRF. She took good care of him and I trusted her. The reason I left was we took Sam in for blockage and they thought he was to be neutered. He came home all woozy and they never told me he had been sedated. Her techs back then were a bunch of idiots I thought! Keepin my fingers crossed on the vet visit tomorrow.

Sue,

How about taking in your spreadsheet , show her and tell her you want to monitor at home? Plead money issues. You might take your meter so you could show her how you test him and compare your meter with hers. As for the food, just tell her you have tried him on everything she suggests and he won't eat it. (Unless she suggests wet lo carb, that is!)

Numbers are improving a little. You have several in the 300s. Fingers and paws crossed here.

Good luck. We know how hard it is to find a vet that knows about diabetes.

Sue
