Ok guys..

Im sorry I havent posted in a while. My mom has been on life support and its been rough.

I am able to better test Jacks BG his numbers are ranging from mid 200's to mid 400's at his lowest. The doctor upped him to 5 units. I cant not get him to eat food with his methyl b12 and his antibiotic with it? Any ideas?

Hes hiding alot. Have you experienced this with your kitties?

Im glad hes doing better but theres still room for improvement
 
That is an awfully high dose of Prozinc - are you doing any curves at home - ie testing him every 2 hours from shot to shot, or testing him every 3 hours shot to shot?

And is he eating any dry food at all?
 
This sounds like such a difficult time for you. How can we help? Did we find anyone who lives nearby who might be a resource?

The last time you posted, if I remember right, you were planning to reduce the dose and reduce the dry food but not take it away completely. Did you try that? Were you able to get any midcycle numbers?

The reason we want to see some of his numbers is that we fear he may be bouncing from lower to higher numbers, and increasing the insulin will make that worse. The numbers that will help us see if that is happening are the numbers around the middle of the cycle, 5-6 hours after the shot.

If he is hiding, he is probably feeling crummy. Your last post you thought he was feeling better. What changed? Food or insulin dose? They can hide if they are too low or too low. It's important to figure out which and quickly.

I know (I have walked in your shoes) how difficult it is to divide your time between home and hospital. But if you could take a break and get home around that 5/6 mark and get some numbers, it would help us help you figure this out and keep Jackie safe.

I would be glad to set up a spreadsheet with Jackie's numbers if you want me to. Just go to the lower LH corner of my post and choose the pm button. We can get a spreadsheet up with the numbers you have. That will help people advise you.
 
I'm sorry about your Mom. You certainly have some difficult challenges to work with right now.

I'm curious, have you been able to administer any of the antibiotics? Or are you just having trouble giving both medications? He could still be feeling cruddy from the UTI if he's not getting the ABs.
 
Saw Jackie tonight..


Vet said let his ears heal. For some reason he has uber sensitive ears. I know the BG tesing doesnt help, but hes had sensitive ears as a kitten. Hed always rub and paw at them. The vet said a little vasiline on the spot before testing will really help.

Still cant get the antibiotics in him. Put it in his food and he wont touch it. Same with Methyl b 12. I dont want to shove meds down his throat when he has to do all this diabetic stuff. So the doctor prescribed pills and were going to try the pill pocket thingies..you know what i am talking about. Thatll help with his methyl b 12 wont it?

He is doing a lot better. Not totally off the dry but I make wet food available more often. I came to check on dad and he was chillin on the couch like he usually does with his paw stretched out smirking like the chesire cat. I tested right in the middle of the shots..as you know Ive been up at the hospital and its been running in the 250's..not perfect but much better than 700 two weeks ago. PLUS he gained a pound. I know I need to do curves but my "stuff" will be over in a few days and I can be more thorough then.

all in all, some improvement

Not many people use the paw pad for tests. My reasoning for not doing so would be because there's a risk of it getting infected with the litter box, etc. It is an option and you gotta do whatever works for you. Likewise, use of the lancet pens is a matter of personal preference. Some cats don't like the clicking sound of the pen, so if you want to try that maybe start by clicking the pen by Jack's ear and give treats first so he gets used to it. Also, use a clear tip so you can see where you're shooting. You'll have to figure out what depth works best for you.
 
With pill pockets, I take half of one and wrap it around small pills. Bigger pills may need to be cut into smaller pieces.

Some antibiotics may be given subcutaneously, if pill pockets don't work out.
