The first test was OK so when the second came in t he vet was so surprised because it was so high. Sophia is losing weight even though she eats. It seems that the gel is not working well. The vet said to give it to her twice daily on both ears instead of both ears in the morning and one ear at night. Does anybody out there have the same problem? Thank you.

What is the 87 value for? T4 or Free T4? What is the normal range for the value?
How much (mg) fo the transdermal are you giving. One normally uses 0.1 ml but the concentration is changes. My Bailey gets 6.25 mg twice daily. He started at 5 mg once daily.

Re: Sophia's Thyroid now is 87

Thanks for your reply. The vet said 10-50 is normal.. I am a little confused about T-4 and free T-4. the name of the med is Methimazole.it comes in a brown dispenser.the vet also said that there is a pharmacy that makes a cream instead of gel/she just found out. I want to the the best for our 'little girl'.

I did not have any luck with transdermal meds for HyperT, tried it with two of mine and thier values kept rising. The pills worked better for us. Methimazole is the generic for Tapazole. What dose did your vet recommend?

Have you heard of Radio Iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism?

Do you have the units for the 87? The following say that a T4 of >47 nmol/L is positive and a fT4(ED)>51 is positive for hyperthyroidism.

For a T4 in ug/dL, an Idexx test report for my Bailey:
Interpretive ranges: (of T4 value of 4.0 with norm of 0.5-4.7 ug/dL)
(The 4 value was after a month on 5 mg/day transdermal)
<0.5 subnormal
0.5-4.7 normal
2.3-4.7 grey zone in old or symptomatic cats
>4.7 consistent with hyperthyroidism

Cats with subnormal T4 values are almost exclusively euthyroid sick or
overtreated for their hyperthyroidism. Older cats with consistent
clinical signs and T4 values in the grey zone may have early
hyperthyroidism or a concurrent non-thyroidal illness. Hyperthyroidism
may be confirmed in these cats by adding on a free T4 or by performing
a T3 suppression test. Following treatment with methimazole, T4 values
will generally fall within the lower end of the reference range
(0.5 - 2.3).

I would first try increase the transdermal drug based on my Bailey's experience. Can you find out how much yo are now giving?

When I had a hyperthyroid kitty, she was always so hungry that she would eat the dollop of canned food (A/D) into which I had dissolved her methimazole tablet.

If the transdermal gel continues to be ineffective, this may be an option for you.

Thank you... we have to start giving her 0.2 twice daily on both ears. we had been giving her o1 both ears and o.1 one ear daily. So hopefully this will work. I know that she went from 47 in august to 83 in Jan. and it is obvious that there is not enough gel. I see how it goes but she is very finicky and may detect the pill in the food and we can't just give it to her because she is wild. We glad that her fructose test was great. She has been diet controlled since Oct 2005 with FF now after she rejected DM.The vet did not tell me anything about the finer numbers of her T-test.

re idodine treatment. I felt it was a good idea but dh .. it is his cat... said it was too expensive and she does not do well away from home. Last time she simply refused to eat. Sophia 15 years old when she got hyper-t was too old he felt. I think he is a little sorry now that she is just fading away...

I had a feral cat that lived with me for years. There was no way to ever touch her and getting her to the vet took two of us covered head to toe, cornering her and lots of tears on my part. She was Hypert. I really did crush her tablet and feed it to her in her canned food. She didn't notice it. She took it that way for five years.

My friendly cats on the same med also took it crushed in their Fancy Feast twice a day.
