Sonny, diagnosed 10 days ago, has been stabilized and has been off insulin for 3 days! After a few days at high doses of Humulin N to get him out of danger (over 600, legs giving out, appearing blind) we were able to cut the dose as we weaned off dry food, and he's been holding under 200 (usually MUCH under 200) since Saturday. We're cautiously optimistic that we gave his pancreas a "jump start" and with the diet change he'll be in remission, or if he has to go back on, he'll likely re-stabilize at a very small dose. At least for now. We know it could climb out of control at any time, but his legs and eyes have returned to normal, and his numbers are great! We could have lost him a couple times when he was so high and out of control (I honestly thought he had a stroke the one night,) but we are so pleased that he responded so well to the interventions. He actually went down (naturally) to 62 this afternoon before I had to leave, and it was going to be several hours before my husband would be home. I gave him a can and left just enough dry to cover the bottom of a cereal bowl, one layer...(between 3 cats...) and when my husband checked him a few hours later, he was only 90! After dinner, he only went up to 119. At least this time, our old boy seems to be regulating himself (with some help from our vet and us...)

Forgot to mention he surprised me last night by tossing around a cat toy. He is a senior, and rarely plays with toys...but he snatched that "cookie" toy from the little flat-faced guy (our youngster himalayan) and batted it around.

Good morning Terri -

Hooray for Sonny!!! I'm SOOOO glad to hear he continues to do well! I know it's been a REALLY REALLY bumpy 10 days, but hopefully the worst is behind him and he's moving in the right direction! The little old guy has some fire in his belly!!! Go Sonny!!!

:RAHCAT :RAHCAT Hurray! What lovely news. Another reminder that every cat is different and Humulin can work in some cats, and diet change always helps.
