? somewhat URGENT - dramatic drop after months in red and black

... and I don't know how much to give tonight? Please can someone look at the SS and advise? been on 9 and 9.5 units pm-am, now this number really threw me?!?!?!!? I'm thinking 8 units and test at +6? and be ready with maple syrup? or is 8 units too much?
 
I have given him 8 for now, will test him at +4, vet's going to call me in half an hour... I have food and maple syrup at the ready
 
Sorry I don't have dosing advice. And I hate to even think this, but I have a high-dose kitty too... has anyone suggested you test for Acromegaly and/or IAA? We still haven't been able to get Rocket regulated, but we had him tested in June and his results were positive for Acromegaly. We've since switched to Levemir and he's doing a little better. Anyway let us know if you've already looked into this. :bighug:
 
Ok I just found one of your threads from June; you mentioned having to wait to get the IGF-1 test done - have you done this yet? If (and I really hope it's just an "if") your cat tests positive, you might want to think about switching to another insulin. ProZinc didn't last long enough in Rocket's system, and you can see all the angry reds and blacks we had before his acro diagnosis. Levemir works a little differently and seems to give a lot of cats flatter numbers. Anyway please let us know if you're getting the test back soon.
 
Thank you for the responses. I didn't have the IGF test done in the end as it's upwards of £300. also, if he's acro (and he probably is), we can't do anything about it. I mean I will not have the resources to have him sent to London and have his pituitary removed for £8000 as I read somewhere. Also I'm not planning to subject him to cancer treatment. He's approaching 17, we seem to be getting somewhere with his numbers now, we're going to the vet tomorrow, and then take it from there. He seems to be responding to the dose he's on now. I mean we had NEVER had these numbers before, always black and red, and this past week for the first time we've had our first yellow and even blue!!! we're celebrating atm.
 
I'm sorry, I looked at your spreadsheet, but not your whole signature... at 17 I wouldn't put my kitty through treatment either... just keep him happy and give him all the love you can! I'm very happy that you're starting to get better numbers. :) I know when Rocket's spreadsheet was all red and black I was just a mess. My heart sank every time I took his tests. Please give Galaxy a huge hug from me! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

It's horrible, isn't it! I had so many sleepless nights, I would go to work crying my eyes out; I even stopped testing preshot, cos I just couldn't face those numbers...

You have made great progress getting Galaxy down to those blue numbers. With our high dose kittehs, all progress should be celebrated.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope you can do pre-shot tests now. It is important, just in case Galaxy has a low number at preshot.

B12 - I saw in your spreadsheet comments you were using the other B12. Methylcobalamine is the objective. Zobaline has the methylcobolomine with the addition of Folic acid to help with absorption. (Zobaline link) Glad to see that you switched B12.

One option for Acro is cabergoline. Olive (kitteh) is being treated by Paula with cabergoline doses. Paula recently summarized costs

Ollie cabergoline costs $127 a month, the lev is $169 a year at this time. Let's say the SRT is about $6000. Ollie can have her meds for just over 45 months before we reach the cost of SRT.​

@Keskat&Rocket just completed SRT for Rocket yesterday (August 16, 2019). It was expensive. We are hopeful to see some insulin doses decrease over the next months.

I'm not on the forum as much these days since Leoberry is gone. But I know just how challenging Acro and diabetes is. You are doing a great job with Galaxy.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just checking in on Galaxy. Kudos to you for getting the B12 and the twice daily doses. That should help.

Also kudos for the additional testing and getting Galaxy to some blue numbers. I bet he feels a lot better now with some regulated blood glucose. If you keep up this great regimen, Galaxy's neuropathy has a good chance of healing.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

HI JeffJ, thank you so much for checking in. Yes, he's slightly better, but there's always something. Strangely enough, now that his numbers are so much better than before, his neuropathy got so much worse he's barely able to walk 3 feet in one go. Oral B12 doesn't seem to be helping much. Ordered B12 injections, but I fear it will be cyano-cobalamine, which is normally given for something different, not neuropathy. He's on painrelief. I've been toying with the idea of trying CBD oil? might want to ask around first of course. And, of course, we're constipated, in spite of a good 100-125 ml SQF daily.

Hope you're OK after Leoberry's passing. :bighug::bighug:
 
Hi Amy - yes, the methyl cobalamine is the correct type, instead of cyano-cobalamine.

The B12 is not an instant fix, and it looks like you just recently started it. Also BG regulation is key. You are close to regulating Galaxy. Don't give up hope. Once you get him regulated and the supplemental B12, then we can all hope his neuropathy will reverse. I'm really sorry to hear that his neuropathy is so bad right now. I know it is discouraging. Keep up the regimen. And get Galaxy into daily blues and greens for his nadir - critical to get him under that renal threshold.:bighug::bighug:

For Leo, we are doing better. The first few weeks were the hardest. Little Dude kept crying and looking for Leo all over the house, and the front and back yard. It was really hard to watch him. But now he has accepted it. We are so lucky that Little Dude was such a good brother, as he was a neighborhood stray we adopted. And we are fortunate that Leo tried so hard to stay healthy with us. Still, I miss him so much. He really was a good boy, and has left us a legacy of the very best memories ever. My sweet kitteh - Acro kittehs are the sweetest. :bighug::bighug:

Hello Edy, just checking in with you :) I took a look at your spreadsheet and it looks like Galaxy is being a wee bit unpredictable today. Good job on getting him into safer numbers! It's funny, isn't it - Rocket had his first greens about a week ago, and while it was great to see, it's scary at the same time. Hang in there, like Jeff said don't give up hope! I know it's frustrating - Rocket is sure hard to manage these days. I understand.

I just now saw that you made a post about his low numbers this morning - hopefully some experienced Prozinc folks can help you there. You might want to add something (either in your post or in your signature) that you do suspect Acro, because everyone will see the high dose and keep asking you about it, and it does make a difference since it could make Galaxy more unpredictable overall.

Give Galaxy some hugs for me. Make sure to take time for yourself too. :bighug:
