Some Forward Thinking Questions About Weight Loss

So once we have the BS's under control when should I start looking at weight loss, if at all. I know, the vet knows, and you all know that 17.5lbs is overweight for the poor guy. He is 18 so is weight loss even an option in the future? There is no exercise in his vocabulary so it would have to be caloric weight loss.

I would of course work with my vet to monitor him but figured some of you guys have been there done that and would have some knowledge.

Thanks

Is Bingo the grey and white kitty on your blog? Very handsome. I don't have time to read the blog now but it looks interesting, very nice photography.

Dear Brandy, and, of course, you too, Bingo!,

He's already guarding your daughter's room, right? Guarding is exercise.

One paw step at a time, dearest Brandy...

Much love and countless hugs for you and your heart,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who taught one vet to use the term Fluffy rather than the O word...

Fair enough and yes the grey and white guy is Bingo, thanks the photo compliments I am just using a 12mp point and shoot, I am toying with the idea of getting an DSLR.

Yes I know one step at a time but it was a question that was fluttering around in my head.

:D

You will probably find that once his BG levels are under control and if you are feeding him a canned or raw food diet that he will automatically begin to lose weight. That is what seems to happen with my cats.

I agree, with the food change and when the BG is under control, it will take care of itself. My other two kitties are slimming an Maisey is getting back to where she should be. She's been a ton of fun to watch this week, as she plays "huntress" under the curtain and between rooms.

There are a couple of things that come to mind regarding his weight. Perhaps you already have a baby scale. I bought one used for $40 and weigh all my cats 2x a month.

You can also figure out how many calories he needs (based on age, activity level, and ideal weight) - maybe ask the vet what his ideal weight would be. Tony weighs 13 lbs and his vet says that he is just right. He gets 2 cans of 156 calories daily. Janet and Binky's list has calories on it, so its pretty easy to calculate.

Ideas to help him feel fuller are to split his meals into several smaller portions over the day and to add water to the food. I added hot water in the winter and Tony thought that the gravy was yummy.

It may be a bit premature to start lowering his calories, but thought that I'd pass on these thoughts before I forget!
