Hi, sorry to be a bother but I need assistance.
Here are Sylvie's #'s over the last 24 hours. I have been working 12 hour night shifts for the last 2 nights so this is why her shot time is wonky...

- 19.4/349 @ 2:30 am on July 31 - Gave 1 unit
- 21.2/381 @ 7:30 am on July 31
- 23.1/415 @ 2:00 pm on July 31 - Gave 1 unit
- 13.8/248 @ 6:30 pm on July 31 (last check before work)

came home on a break at 2:00 am Aug 1
- 12.2/219 @ 2:00 am
So here is where I get confused. It is now 12 hours after her last dose and I am afraid to shoot at this # because I have to go back to work until 7:30 am - Do I skip the dose or should I give .5 or .25? I just don't want her to go hypo when I am not around, and on the other hand I don't want it to get into the 400's between now and when I get home. This is where I seem to be having trouble.....

Any suggestions for me ? Please and many thanks

Hi Michelle,

As a general rule 'if in doubt, skip the shot' is the safest option.
We recommend that those new to diabetes don't give shots below 11/200 until they've gathered data to show how their cat responds to insulin.

It may well be that a reduced dose, .25 or .5 would be OK in this instance. But if you are worried then you may wish to first try this strategy at a time when you can be around to monitor.

Which insulin are you using?
Edited to add: I see you're using Lantus
And does your kitty have any history of ketones?
(Will go and check your other posts...)

Eliz

PS. You could never be "a bother". Ask all the questions you want to. That's why we're here.

Thank you for your responses. Yes, I did decide to give .25 but I also left some FF gravy style foodies out for her and the little one. I just find that when I have skipped a full dose then when I get to her the #'s are so high that it's hard to find that 'sweet spot'. I have kept immaculate records of every glucometer check and every insulin injection in a journal for my vet to go over. It's been just over a month since the diagnosis and I see the vet this week again.

I am off now for 4 days so I plan to do another curve and watch her closely.

Thanks again!

Sorry Eliz, I don't know of her having any history of ketones......
That's good, Michelle. (Some kitties have ketones at diagnosis).
The only reason I asked is that a reason to sometimes not skip a shot is if a kitty is ketone-prone.

Yes, doc told me that besides her glucose #'s and the hyperthyroid that all her other labs looked REALLY good for a cat her age and that was good news

On a totally different topic, can you tell me how I can post a photo of her that is attached to my profile? I see that other people have that and I tried but to no avail.

Thanks a bunch!!
