And we were having some pretty nice cycles too. Shot 1.25, hopefully he comes down a bit and ends up in the 300s again. But I know better than to expect that, lol.

Do you guys think I should have given 1 unit instead, or even upped to 1.5? Or was the 1.25 about right with his BG 600+?

Wish I could help you with that but I am too new. Just hang in there until someone who knows the answer stops by. I am thinking that 1.25 may not be enough at this point but someone with more experience may tell you differently so please don't go by me.

My kitty has never been in the black zone (knock wood) so I am unsure how I would proceed should I ever see a number like that. Hang tight! Someone will be here soon I suspect. Just wanted to offer my support.

I like the 1.25u for now too.

That 113 yesterday may be low enough to cause a bounce, Socks hasn't seen a number that low in a long time.

Sometimes, you just have to grit your teeth and wait out the high numbers when/if from a bounce.

Too high for a day is better than too low for a moment.

See what I mean? I am too new and all of the more experienced people think the 1.25 is the right amount so that is why I said not to go by me

I am trying to lower the amount my Simon gets too. The vet wanted him on 3 units! We started with 2 which was even higher than he probably should have been getting to start with, but I gave him 3 units the first day when I came home from the vet and he spiked HIGHER all day instead of getting lower numbers. This stuff is sometimes counterintuitive it seems confused_cat

Now, I upped to 2.25 and his numbers have been much better. This morning he was at 199 for his AMPS and I gave him 2 units instead of 2.25. Yesterday I did the same thing and by his PMPS, he was over 400? Gah, who knows. Sooner or later I guess we find the magic number though.

Hang in there!

Why glucose levels spike:

1) food - some cats scarf and this may raise the glucose substantially about 2 hours after eating. You might slow this down by smearing the food over a large plate, freezing some of the food so that it may be eaten as it thaws, feeding mini meals if you are home, or using a timed feeder such as PetSafe 5. You may leave food down for a cat that grazes. Pick up all food at +10 so that the evening pre-shot is not affected much by food.

2) Fast drop of insulin - some cats drop very quickly on a dose of insulin. This sudden drop triggers counter-regulatory hormones which release stored glucose.

3) Bouncing in response to low numbers - if the insulin brings the glucose level down to a new, unaccustomed level, the body will respond with counter-regulatory hormones.

4) contraband - the cat got high carb food somewhere - ex bread, or fed the wrong food.

PMPS was 507, so looking on the bright side, at least it was low enough for the meter to read, lol.

Do you guys think if he gets back down to the 300's I should stick with 1.25 or 1 unit? I wouldn't unless I was able to monitor him midcycle of course. He had that +10 113 on 1 unit, but then he spiked up the next two cycles.

Joyce - yeah I've noticed this sugardance can be very counterintuitive and frustrating at times, but I just remind myself we have only been at this a month, and while I know some cats get regulated very quickly, it can still take some time.

I checked him for ketones and was a bit confused, I had a hard time telling if it was negative or trace, or in between. It seemed to be negative with a dash of the trace color. If it is trace, are you able to tell for sure, or is it sort of in between in terms of color?

It is hard to tell what is going on even with the midcycle numbers that it's hard to predict what to dose at 300/500. I think definitely go with 1.25 when he is in the reds and blacks. When you won't be around and he is in the 300s, I think I'd go down to one unit.

The best way I know to check the ketone strips so you can see what is normal is to pee on one yourself. Is he feeling okay? Eating okay?

I know you wish he would just settle in. Me too. You are not alone. Check out newbie Jack's ss. It looks a lot like Sock's. Lots of bouncing with these kitties.
