So my plans sort of backfired

I did a lot of testing on Sunday, but by the end of the day, his ears were tender and heavily scabbed, I was having trouble getting blood because of the scabs/scar tissue (presumedly), and Dagron was just so done with getting poked. I gave him a bit of a break Monday and Tuesday (at least until his low number PMPS last night).

Is there anything yall can tell me from the numbers I got since Saturday?

I also made some changes to how I handle/store the insulin, and to not feeding him before a test.

If a dose of 5 u is high enough to drop BG to the point where you can't give insulin as happened last night, the dose has to be reduced. The red number this morning is what we call bouncing. I'd go back to 4 u.

I want to call his vet to talk about some other stuff, so I will try to talk to him about that tomorrow as well. Thank you.

Sometimes I wish he were a lab kitty so I could just do all the tests and not have to worry about it. Except even if he were a lab kitty and I weren't attached to him, I would feel bad about stressing him out. So. I guess I just wish testing was easier on him!

Testing really does get easier over time. His ears will grow extra capillaries. Your technique will be better so you can be very quick about it. And last, but not least, you'll be less worried about hurting him and will be far calmer and more business-like in your approach.

It will get better! Our kitty turned into a demon cat. Now only 4 months later she comes when she hears us getting her things out and purs the entire time. She loves treats so that's probably why. And she knows morning and nignt that when she gets it done she gets her canned food right after :)

Pinch and hold the ear for a few seconds after testing to help prevent scabs and bruising. You can also apply neosporin ointment with pain relief.

Over time and as you gather data, you will be able to give insulin at lower numbers, but not yet. 5 units got him into some nice numbers, not dangerously low. Going back to 4 units might be too big a drop. Maybe something like 4.5 units as his new dose, as 4 units wasn't doing anything for him. We typically do increases by 0.25 units ata a time. The one unit increase was too big a jump up in dose.

I talked to my vet today, and he recommended dropping back down to 4u, so that is what I gave Dagron this evening. I think what I want to do is run another curve when I get more test strips, and then possibly go up to 4.5u.
