What the heck? I just took Calley's bg and the first number I got was 111. Then I retested and got 354. Then I retested and got 422. So....what does all this mean? What number do I go with and do I give insulin? What if the true number was the first one of 111. Then I shouldn't dose should I?

HELP Is my glucose meter going bad? Makes me wonder if that 530 number I got at +6 was a true number. Thoughts

So is the Reli-on Micro easier to test with....with small amount of blood? I bought a new box of lancets....33 gauge and I can't seem to get good blood out of her lately. I end up going through several test strips at each testing time.

Okay. First off either too little or too much blood can give wonky readings. YES the micro use less blood and personally I like it better and think it's easier to use when first learning to test. I have both as well as two Bayer Contours, and a one touch mini. Love love love the One Touch just can't afford to test two cats with it as the strips are pricey.

All meters have a +/- 20% variance. You can test the exact same drop of blood 3 times and get 3 different results. Only lab tests will give you an exact reading. Hand held glucometers are meant to give you a general range and for our purposes work just fine. This isn't an exact science.

With those readings I'd toss out the 111 and average the other two or just pick one since they're both within meter variance range.

With lancets the smaller the number the bigger the hole they make. A 33 gauge is smaller than your syringe needle. I use 33s with Autumn because I've tested her a minimum of 4 times a day for 2 Years Her ears have learned to bleed. Yes they learn or more accurately grow more capilaries. With Cassanova I still use 28 gauge because he's only been tested for about 9 months his ears haven't learned to bleed well yet.

Also unlike syringes you can reuse the lancet if you have to do multiple sticks. The only reason I change lancets every test is because I'm testing multiple cats and need to avoid cross contamination. When it was just Autumn I used 1 lancet per day.

Yes give insulin

By The Way. What dose are you giving? I saw somewhere you gave 1u. I believe I started her at .5
With Lantus you give the same dose regardless of preshot numbers. Dosing changes are based on nadirs after the cat settles which can take some cats a week to two weeks of the same dose given a.m. and p.m. Everytime you change dose the shed has to readjust which takes about 72 hours

Thank you thank you thank you.

I am dosing at .5 since she started Lantus. Ok. I will go give her insulin and her evening meal.

I was so mad that I had to prick her so many times tonight to get a number. :(

Ooops....another question. Do I need to give the insulin shot in the same place for the shed to build? I have been giving the shot around the scruff of neck....I part the fur and make sure it goes under the skin. Is that right/ok?

Nope. In fact you should move the injection site around some so she doesn't develop scar tissue. I shoot the scruff on both of mine but you can shoot anywhere there is loose enough skin to pull up away from the muscle and the cat allows. Musette would only allow me to shoot in her side, Maxwell the flank and Autumn her scruff, Cassanova could care less where I shoot as long as his face is whiskers deep in a food bowl. The way I keep track is a.m. =right side, p.m.=left side of their scruffs.

Honestly I've been shooting for so long with I no longer look. It's become automatic.
