So excited! First BG reading under 200!

I am testing every two hours today cause I am working from home and I finally feel comfortable enough to poke my poor baby's ear even though he is not crazy about it. His post shot reading at 2 hours was 190! I am happy because his BS is getting lower since the first day of testing (Friday) as it has not been below 250 yet! But, at the same time, I am worried that since it is under 200, I have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't crash? Does this make sense? I will test again at 10:30 which will be 4 hours post shot. Hopefully I can see good numbers (high green would make me happy) but not see anything too low that will crash him. nailbite_smile

Thanks so much for all of your help so far. I am working really hard to get him to where he is somewhat stable in terms of his BS.
 
Hurrah! Good news. Yes, if you could get some numbers today, that would be great. Maybe around 5-7 and then 8-10 if possible. The more data early on, the better.

Maybe it has taken his body until now to use the insulin effectively (some cats take several weeks before the insulin seems to really be working). The other factor is the wet food kicking in.

Keep testing today, around +5-7 and then again +8-10 time frame like Sienne suggested. Every test number you get is more data to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Remember to give Simon a low carb treat for every test you do. That is part one of his reward. Then give him some head scritchies or body massages and maybe brush him if he likes that. Tell him 'Simon, you're such a good boy, a very good boy.' And he will be.
 
I will do a 5 hour (11:30am EST) and a 9 hour (3:30EST). Then of course a pre PM shot. He is acting very lovey dovey this morning. Cuddling up to me and purring a lot. :-D The only thing he did that disturbed me a little since he never does this is that he went pee outside of his litter box (right in front of it).

We are having to change it a lot more often recently. Used to be once a week that he got all brand new litter, but now with all of the peeing, we change it twice to three times a week.
 
Being a newbie myself the first thing I though of was with the peeing have you done a ketone test? I do Loki's once a week just to be sure, even if he shows no symptoms, just my 2 cents here. Or it could be the litter change too.
 
Those test times sound good.

Yes, the polyuria (P/U) can certainly cause larger puddles and more frequent LB use - or misses. Usually, as the BG numbers get regulated, the size of the pee puddles returns to normal.
 
Because Simon generally disappears for a nap around noon time, I decided to do a 5 hour reading. Just did it and it was 180! I am so pleased with these numbers today and his appetite and his mood are excellent. It is chilly here in CT today, so I lit a fire in the fireplace which is his favorite thing in the world. He will lay in front of the fireplace and purr and sleep. That way I can keep an eye on him instead of him taking off for one of his hiding places. He won't leave when I light the fire..LOL.

I am so very happy that he is in the blue zone today and that his pre shot was in yellow for the first time since I began this on Saturday. I know my vet is shocked that I decided to monitor on my own since most people opt for them to do it. If I had not found this website, I would have been too afraid to do this on my own, even with the You tube videos of the ear sticks! @-)
 
Simon is taking a dip into the blue lagoon today. Hope he has a cute pair of swim trunks. ;-)

Yes, it is encouraging to see some blue numbers so early in this process. Keep getting nice numbers like that and it give the pancreas time to heal and maybe start to produce some insulin on it's own.

Just did his +9 and unfortunately, it was 355...ugh. I guess this can break your heart pretty quickly :cry: Was hoping I would have a nice curve where he was between 200-250 at shot time, but that is still 3 hours away and he is at 355 already. Is this from the snacks he gets when I test him? confused_cat

They are really tiny and the vet said low in carbs (says they are chicken breasts and low fat but does not give carbs) and they are called "Lean Treats" by a company called Nutrisentials. I gave him two each time I tested on his ear which means he had 8 today so far.
 
You have only been at this 5 days, right? It is not going to happen overnight; you've got to be patient. It is possible that he is bouncing from the blues earlier. They are lower levels than his body has seen and sometimes the body will release extra sugars to bring him up. Often cats bounce from lower numbers. Some cats bounce for a couple cycles; some bounce during the cycle; some bounce the next cycle. You're trying to figure out his patterns.

Celebrate your blues and get on those patience pants!
 
I found a website that lists the ingredients for those Nutrisentials Lean treats.

Corn would be carbs, the Hight Fructose Corn Syrup would be carbs and the Wheat flour would be carbs, even the Chicken Liver has some carbs in it.

Soooooo...... I would say these are not a good low carb treat to give for your SugarHunk TM, Simon.

Thanks for the information on the treats. I know I am impatient. Patience was never my strong suit :oops: . I am giving him bites of real chicken when I test him tonight. He loves that anyway and will be thrilled. He seems to be avoiding me after this last test. He went to his Daddy when he called him but when I called, he took off like a bat out of heck and is hiding. I guess he has had his fill of being stuck in the ear today. One more time (pre shot BG reading) and I will leave him alone until tomorrow morning. Poor baby :YMSIGH:
 
What is your favorite color? We need to know so we can lend you a pair of patience pants in your favorite color.
 
Blue it is. Patience shorts are also available for those hot summer days.

I think I had my first "fur shot" tonight. Ugh...oh well. The syringe looked bent when I looked at the tip so that is why I "missed" I must have bent it putting the cap back on after I filled it...sheesh!
 
You might want to make a note of that on the SS in the remarks/comments column. "possible Fur shot?" Some later tests this evening might give you a better idea if it was a fur shot or not.

Never give another shot if you think you have missed. You can't take the insulin back out once you have injected it. "Better to be too high for a day than too low for a moment."

Does it smell like bandaids? Or did you run your hand over the injection spot and feel wetness? These are the two best indicators of a fur shot, besides the BG numbers that is.
 
I felt wet on my hand. I always check after giving it and never felt any wet until tonight..ugh. Read your response on the other thread too. Won't give him anymore. Learned my lesson about putting that cap back on the syringe very carefully. When I looked at it after giving the shot, it was bent sideways!
