Smokey Dx. Hyper-T today!

We are back from the vet! Smokey was diagnosed and is out of the previous, "Gray" area and now Hyper-T. We are starting on a conservative dose of the medication 1x day and we are dropping his insulin dosage starting tomorrow.

I'm a little relieved to know that all of my worries and the crazy behavior wasn't just his Diabetes after all! And most importantly, I wasn't going crazy!

My sweet boy should start feeling better very soon! The vet also said that there have been 3 kitties recently who were all OTJ (like mine) and then diagnosed with Hyper-T, and ALL of them came out of remission!! Hopefully we can get everything back on track! All I want to see is Smokey feel better!

My vet and I are on the same page and only want what is best for my kitty! I am so blessed to have such great friends on this board! Thanks for sticking by me through thick and thin.

Hi guys - so sorry for the DX, but it sounds like you are in good hands. I'd cross post in Health too - there is bound to be lots of help there. I am glad that you have figured out what is going on with smokey. Good luck!
 
sorry about the diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism can definitely cause blood glucose to become unregulated, and it can take a while to regulate the hyperthyroidism so you might be bouncing around for a while. The good news is that now you know what is going on and can make a plan.
 
My senior civvie, Mario, was diagnosed with Hyper-T in January...same week Trixie was diagnosed with diabetes. Good times here! I haven't had the time to learn as much about Hyper-T, but I do know that you want to monitor Smokey's BP and kidneys, because Hyper-T can have an effect on both of those. As of a few weeks ago, Mario's Hyper-T was considered regulated, his kidneys were in good shape, but his BP is still too high (he's on meds; goes back for yet another BP check this Friday). So be sure your vet is covering all bases!

I'm so sorry to read about Smokey's Hyper-T diagnosis. But it looks like you caught it in the early stages. I'm glad you have a good vet. Did you get the tests for Chronic Renal failure (CRF) too? (I don't remember what they are, but if you ask on Health you will find out.) Hyper-T, because it speeds up the metabolism, tends to mask renal symptoms. (This is what happened with our kitty Stu last summer.)

Not to alarm you but my Alex is a hyper-T kitty(among other things) and that is harder to control than diabetes. The thyroid is pretty much responsible for everything else that goes on in the body. It's a very delicate balance trying to regulate diabetes and hyper-t. Just when you think you have one under control, the other goes amok. Out of control hyper-t can also lead to heart problems. If your Smokey is otherwise healthy I would check into some of the other options for controlling/removing the thyroid. My cat is not a candidate for surgery or even I-131 because he has a heart condition and gets stressed out when he isn't with me...to the point where it could hurt him and he would have to be isolated for 3 days. But I would do that in a New York minute if I could! Tapezole is a very effective medication but it doesn't come without possible side effects so it's important that you do read up on it if that's the course you take.....that is the course I take. So far, so good. In time you'll get to know when the dose needs to be adjusted. Just do some reading about it and how it affects diabetes in cats and you will be that much more ready to help your cat and you will be able to stay much more calm when you understand why things might happen and take appropriate steps to deal with this balancing act :)

Sounds like with the good relationship with your vet and now a reason why Smokey has such high crazy numbers you can breathe a little easier. I'm sure with your positive attitude everything will get worked out and you will learn all about hyper-T and the different ways to treat it.

We are headed back to the vet tomorrow for a follow up for my cat's dental surgeries. It's too soon I think for the vet to do a T4 and Free T4 test again on Guinness, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with the same diagnosis. He has an enlarged heart and we just can't seem to get his numbers to come down. He's acting fairly normal (aside from drinking water for the first time in 2 years), but I know something is going on that we haven't pin-pointed yet. I would feel relieved, like I'm sure you do, just to know what the monster is rather than playing some guessing game and not knowing.

Good luck with the start of medication and keep us posted. We may end up on that Hyper-T Yahoo board with you.
 
Sorry to hear about the hyperT dx - but at least you have an explanation for why Smokey's numbers have been so crazy! Zoe was dx'd with hyperT a year ago and was put on Tapazol (methimazol). You will have to go for routine bloodwork to check thyroid, kidney and liver values - I think we went monthly. Zoe seemed to handle the methimazol fairly well - she was a candidate for the radioactive iodine. I finally had it done in Sept. She did extremely well with the treatment and her thyroid values are normal now.
