Smelly gassy behind caused by raw food?

My 5 month old civie has a smelly gassy behind  He eats Nature's Variety frozen raw with a little NV Instinct canned. It was said on another board that NV raw contains too much bone which results in smelly gassiness. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I have no medical data on this but I do notice with my cats two get gassy if they eat whole raw fish. A couple of times a month I will buy them a whole fresh fish or frozen whole fish like smelt and dethaw it. I noticed two of my cats will have gas and loose stools for about a day after. One is so smelly even my other cats will avoid him. An alternative explanation would be these cats have a specific intolerance to an ingredient in the food or fish. This might be a good question for Dr. Lisa if she is around today.

hmmm. wonder if there is a more bone to meat ratio in that than homemade??? all mine get HM and no gassy problems. interesting

Usually if there is too much bone it will cause them to get constipated. I don't think it would cause gas. It is probably an ingredient their body isn't used to processing. Have you tried adding a pro-biotic to the raw food until their body evens out?

Baby is on Nature's Variety Raw Food & thrives on it - she does not have this issue. Could it be the canned you are adding? Baby does not get the canned.

I'm not sure what the NV bone:meat ratio is. I'm feeding the organic chicken with the occasional beef. http://www.naturesvariety.com/InstinctR ... orgchicken

I just spoke with the breeder. She feeds the NV organic chicken to all her cats and has never had a smelly gassy problem. She suggests taking a stool sample to the vet to test for parasites.

That's what I saw on Dr. Lisa's web site: too much bone results in constipaton.

Civie was weaned onto NV raw. I've never noticed a problem until the past few weeks.

I've never used pro-biotics before. Is there a brand that is particularily good to use?

I'm only feeding a tiny amount of canned food (half a spoonful if that) twice a day as snacks (at 1 am and 1 pm via the timed feeder) because civie gets hungry and destructive otherwise  Would such a small amount of canned cause gassiness? I'm feeding the NV Instinct chicken or duck.
