Something else I'd like to ask you wonderful people:

My Cleo cat occasionally gets sinus problems - she has had an on & off issue with her nose/ sinuses for a while, which manifests as a general snuffliness, sneezing, and sometimes a bit of a runny nose and/or gunky eye. When this first happened 10 months ago the vet was suggesting anaesthetising her in order to x-ray to try and find the route cause of it all. I decided against this, mainly because I figured an anaesthetic was too high a risk for an elderly, diabetic cat, with potentially the beginnings of kidney issues (as is common with elderly diabetic cats). So instead I asked that the vet not concern himself too much with the cause, and just treat the symptoms.

Cleo was prescribed bisolvon (to dry up the mucus) and antirobe (to ensure against any secondary infections), and this happily cleared up the nasal/ sinus issues within a week, with no side effects.

Since then, she has had the same issue occur once, with the same successful treatment (around 5 months ago).

I've noticed that Cleo has started to get a bit snotty and snuffly again over the past week or so. I have therefore arranged to collect a repeat prescription of the above two meds from the vets. I am however concerned that this may interfere with Cleo's OTJ progress in some way; are there any precautions I should bear in mind?

Many thanks again.

However,

I can't answer the specific question, but I'd say keep monitoring bg. I'm wondering if Lysine would help as a preventative. Have you looked into this? One of my civvies gets sneezy and a bit of a gummy nose if she doesn't get Lysine. Clear with it.

Lysine eh? Everything I've read on it seems to relate to its use as either a preventative for herpes simplex virus, or as a feed supplement in commercial farming for inducing faster animal growth.

Is its use as a remedy for sinus problems purely something you have discovered circumstantially, or is there any available literature on the subject?

I don't have too many concerns re. bisolvon - as I understand it, it is an anti-mucosal agent just just helps to dry things up. I am however a little concerned about antirobe, which is an antibiotic, namely clindamycin. However...I am also aware that any infection can cause glucose levels to rise quite dramatically, so maybe using an antibiotic in a preventative / prophylactic sense isn't such a bad thing in this case?

Antirobe is a short acting, oral drug, which my cat has reacted perfectly well to in the past. It was initially a second choice by the vet, when I (understandably) reacted rather badly to the suggestion of a Convenia shot when this issue first occurred. No mention of the inherent risks at all, and I've since learnt that Convenia wouldn't even have been the best med to use for sinus type infections anyway, it being indicated mainly for infected wounds / UTIs etc. Just goes to show how important research is, and not to automatically trust everything a vet (or even a doctor, for that matter) tells you.

Anyway, I digress somewhat...
