Simba 3/15/13 - AM Highs, PM Lows

Hello,

My conundrum cat stumps me again. For the past 3 days his AM BG's have been 200's to 300's always ending in a nice low 200 and proceeding on to a night of blues and greens. Then next AM, back up to the same plateau of flat 200's.

Today he started the day with a 360 (I attributed that to excess feeding the previous PM, when I had to leave for a bit and he was already 123 at +3. I gave him a .60 a little more than he has been getting to see if I could bring down the high, and got a super high 440, that is insisting on plateauing there for a while, +3 this morning 436 so far. He seems to be dropping 10pts every 15 minutes or so. He's drinking, he even washed, but just before I stuck a bowl of water under his chin he wouldn't wake up even though I was holding his floppy head in my hand.

He's sleeping, it's cloudy, it's going to be 90 today in MARCH! I'm not sure if he's pooped yet, his sister covered up the evidence. I have to go to work, but I'll be back at +6 to check up.

I added beechnut squash to his constipation cocktail, could he be having a carb high? There hasn't been any contraband around lately. Even so, how does that explain why in the PM he's surfing along fine?

Mary

Yes, beechnut baby food. The ingredients are squash and water. 6g of carbs per jar, and he got a teaspoon. But that was just this morning. He hasn't had that the last two mornings.

You might post on Health; I know lots of people have different things for constipation. One of the favorites is Miralax. I don't know whether the baby food would raise the levels or the stress of being constipated would. They are strange numbers today and very unlike your night time numbers. Sometimes he has a late nadir - wonder what he will look like at +8 or so?

OMG! Doo doo occurred! My poor baby. Constipation sucks!!!

He gets 1/8 tsp of miralax 2x a day, all of his food is watered down. Now he gets the addition of baby squash. What a toll it takes on his poor little body!

His numbers:
AMPS - 360
+2 - 440
+3 - 436
+3.25 recheck - 425
POOPIEEEEEEE!!! THANK GOD!!!
+6 - 256
Lunch
+6.5 recheck - 156!!!!!!!!!! <---- @-)
+7 - 170

All 5 P's were functional, just in time for the hottest part of the day! UGH. He was sleeping in direct line of the A/C. I just want to curl up next to him, poor little guy was exhausted.

Poor baby! BTW, isn't it great when you mention poop on a forum and people celebrate!

He certainly came down late in the cycle - not sure if that was that he wasn't stressed with constipation any more or if it was his usual later nadir.

His numbers are not bad even in the daytime. It's those numbers at +2/+3.

Fed, waited 30mins - 206.
Waiting another 30mins.

Completely, he's like a different cat. I'm waiting to see if he's going to come up more. His food usually kicks in an hour later. I'm considering a .20 shot since last time .40 on a 201 went crazy low.

BG came up to 230 1hr after food, so I shot a .2u just in case. I'm hoping for a nice easy surf, after the day he had, it would be lovely for him to have an uneventful night with relaxed ear poking.

PMPS - 191
+PMPS.5 - 206
+1 - 230 - gave .20u (waited 1hr for rising BG)
+2 - 206
+3 - 191 (now that's a smile curve!

Simba is opting to eat on his own when he feels like he needs it. This is his usual behavior for dropping numbers. He learned to warn me of potential hypos, could he be learning how to use food to regulate, or is baby food squash just that delicious???

Hi Mary -

Simba is looking good! And YES, ABSOLUTELY the poop can impact his numbers! Just went through that last week with my boy Grayson! He now gets Lactulose (from the vet), Miralax 1/2 tsp BID, and occasionally some punkin. I used my Halloween punkin, cooked it, skinned it, mushed it up, mixed with water, and filled an ice cube tray. I bring one cube out in a container in the fridge about every week. A small forkfull mixed with his food. The baby food you're using is good as well.

We got to the point of blockage, x-rays, and 3 enemas at the vet. It's important to do poop patrol to make sure things are moving regularly. One of the vets wanted to give me some fiber rich Royal Canin food.... 28% carbs. Um, NO! I'll give him a baby spoon full of All Bran cereal before I do that!

If you have any questions I can help with, just let me know.

Lu-Ann

Thanks Lu-Ann,

Constipation is his nemesis. He's responding well to the squash so far, today he's been circling the litter box a few times, but despite that we are currently surfing a seriously long green streak. I guess he wanted to put on his St. Patty's Day green.
