Should I try stopping insulin? Update: YES! OTJ

After picking one flavor of Fancy Feast and quitting dry food, I saw a significant improvement in Mini Me's glucose readings. He is now getting 1 unit Lantus once a day. His pre shot reading is typically around 120-140. 12 hours after his shot the reading is about 70-90 so I do not give more than 1 shot a day. Every couple of weeks his reading after 24 hours is still around 100 so I may go 36 hours on 1 shot. I have not seen a reading over 140 in about 3 weeks. It has only been a little over a month since he has been free of dry food. Do I try getting rid of the insulin completely or just keep doing what I am doing? Thanks!

Re: Should I try stopping insulin?

Before stopping the insulin altogether you are going to want to try reducing your dose and see if Mini Me can continue to hold those beautiful numbers. So if you are at 1u now you would want to drop it back to either .75 or .5u twice a day if you are getting shootable numbers.

Without a spreadsheet up so I can see what kind of numbers you are getting I can't really tell you which one to try, but the easiest to dose is the .5u if your syringes have half unit marks on them. Try that first and see if you are still getting numbers that are too low to shoot twice a day.

I agree with Mel. Try reducing to .5u, and see if that allows you to dose twice a day. You're getting really nice numbers, and having to skip shots, but that you have to give insulin every day indicates that he still needs "some" insulin. If you cut it out completely, you might see numbers that climb back into the 200s when the depot is completely cleared out of his system.

Re: Should I try stopping insulin?

I lowered to .5 unit but could still only shoot once a day, at the most. It has seemed throughout the lowering process (gradually from 2.5 to .5) that as I decreased the insulin his numbers got better and better. After 5 days at .5 units I stopped the insulin. He has been off for 6 days and all numbers have been between 90 and 112. So far so good!!

If you manage 2 weeks like that, he'll officially Off The Juice!

Re: Should I try stopping insulin?

Well, he has been off insulin for months and looks great! I still only feed the one flavor of Fancy Feast and no dry food. His numbers are consistently in the mid 90s. What a difference a change in diet makes!

You can edit the first post and add "Yes! OTJ!"

As always, nice to hear from a kitty that has been OTJ for a while and missing from the board. Keep it up Mini Me.

A few reminders to keep Mini Me OTJ.

Tips to stay OTJ

1. never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb. Dont feed if you arent sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.

How often are you testing? Is that 115 higher than normal?
